In the wake of Napoleon...
Jul 2017 • Couples
The path to the Church is quite tough, but still you enjoy it due to spectacular views opening to you on the road. When you finally reach the location, you get amazed how breezy the air is: a forest surrounding the Church and tiny springs refresh you and you just don’t want to leave. With nobody around, you feel secluded. So cozy, so home-like – and you begin to understand why Napoleon was in love with this place:

''…Napoleon would spend days on end at the Madonna del Monte hermitage, high up on the hills, reminiscing about his native Corsica. From up there, Bastia seems so near that you feel you can almost touch it…''

Fantastic!!!

The hike to the sanctuary is not to see the sanctuary but admire the views which are spectacular. It is well signposted from Marciana - signed within the town towards the route then upwards. From the town it's about 45 mins. It could be shorter or longer depending on fitness and how long you take to admire the views. Many people don't walk beyond the church but this is the best! With uninterupted views for 180 degrees. Beautiful! The path is steep and broken up cobble stones. Wear comfortable boots/trainers

In Marciana Alta was the nearest pharmacy so we also visited the church with beautiful ceiling paintings from around 1650-1700

Nice hike with lovely views
Jul 2015 • Family
The walk up to the sanctuary is mostly shaded by trees, which is very nice during the warm summer days. The sanctuary itself is quite nice, but it's the walk there that's the bigger attraction. Outside the church there is a small fountain with water to cool down.

I would strongly recommend to continue the path a few minutes beyond the sanctuary for some very nice views of the sea and coast. They say in clear weather you can see Corsica from there, as Napoleon is said to have liked.

Great views. Lovely Sanctuary.
Jun 2014 • Couples
The views are spectacular on this hike to the Sanctuary. and there are interesting rock formations. The church at the top is lovely.. It is a "hike" as even though there is a "road" as the road is an ancient one and made of irregular paving stones so it is rarely smooth and has some steep places. Don't wear loose sandals or flip flops! . It took us much longer than the "45" minutes the guidebook said. Try to go early in the day before it gets too hot and bring water! (You can refill your bottle at the Sanctuary) Be sure you start on the path with the 14 stations of the cross, at station #1. Don't make the mistake we did as we missed the sign and went up a long distance on an asphalt road heading out of the town. The entrance to the path is actually really close to the top of the town.

Nice altar frescoes
Sep 2013 • Family
While the church was not our main goal as we were out for a hike, it was pretty neat to find it and learn that Napoleon himself camped out here during his "stay" on the island. The altar has very pretty frescoe of the Madonna inside.

A peaceful scantuary, worth the climb!
Jun 2013 • Couples
Quite a climb up a fairly steep "paved" path from Marciana Alta past the 14 Stations of the Cross, but well worth the effort for the lovely well-preserved chapel, views over the surrounding countryside and the wind-carved rocks in various shapes. The chapel is a peaceful sanctuary with a painting of the Madonna del Monte and with an outer courtyard served by a water source.
