Maratea Private tour: Italy's little bit of Rio

1 review
The tour of Maratea starts from the highest part of the city: Mount San Biagio. Here you can admire in all its beauty the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the symbol not only of the city of Maratea but of the whole region of Basilicata.

The second largest statue in the world as a dimension after Christ of Rio de Janeiro, the statue of Maratea is 21 meters tall, with a 19-meter arm opening and a face measuring 3 meters.

The statue was made of reinforced concrete covered with a mixture of white cement and Carrara marble and created by the artist Bruno Innocenti in 1965.

After admiring the Christ, the visit continues in the nearby Basilica of San Biagio, patron saint of the town.

The tour continues in the medieval village, with ancient houses with arches close to each other and divided only by narrow lanes and characteristic lanes that fociano in small squares paved in local stone.

Difficult to find an available sunbed at the Mirto Beach. So book in advance. They prioritise existing customers so you should call after five to see whether anybpdy vacated their spot. Once there you will understand the reason of the long line. You will be welcome by a private parking very convenient indeed. Walk a few hundred yards and yuo will reach the beach. Not exactly. Tjere is not beach. Just a multi level terrace with a stairs entrance to the sea. The place is clean and looked after tp the tiny detail. The sea is wonderful, surrounded by black rocks, caverns and protected from the open sea waives by a small island just in front. Like paradise. The place even if full is never crowded and allows for enough personal space. There is a small beach restaurant which will serve fresh salad of the finest ingredients. Staff is courteous and caring. So head to the Mirto with no hesitation. Best.

The owners of El Mirto have artfully harnessed the beauty of this breathtaking cliffside swimming cove . They have preserved the 360 degree views and pristine environment while providing comfort and accessibility for a finite number of visitors to enjoy. Get there early or you will be turned away. There are changing areas and showers and a lovely food service area with a bar. Even the car parking area is scenic as you park under a canopy of olive branches and grapevines. The staff is friendly and kind assisting guests with lounges and umbrellas and swim aids. It is a treat for all ages. Sunset is especially delightful

Once you find the little turn off hwy 18, the road leads you to Il Mirto. Parking in the off season is easy and free. An umbrella and 2 chairs was 14 euros. The view is spectacular as is the water you swim in right below. Lunch was good as was the white wine Absolutely recommended!

We visited the beach here twice. There are steps to the sea, so you need to be a swimmer, although the bar provides floats etc. You pay for a sunbed with parasol, but the setting is stunning and facilities such as changing rooms, toilets etc are good. We enjoyed our lunch in the shaded bar area.
