Little Known Statue Of Jesus Christ Atop A Cliff In Maratea.
May 2019
Maratea is a quaint hill-side village about 2.5 hours south of Naples and sits in spectacular mountains by the sea. Built in 1965 the statue (made of white granite) of Jesus Christ sits on top of one of the highest cliffs or mountains overlooking the sea on what is called St Bagio. The statue is the third tallest in Europe at 21.20 meters and from finger tip to finger tip is 19 meters. Both Maratea and the statue are worthy of a visit. You can walk from the town but the best way is to catch a taxi and have him wait as it was not costly.

Nice walk (not for the infirm) from the upper town; fantastic views
Sep 2019
We walked up on a September evening starting in the upper town or Maratea. It took a bit longer than expected; probably an hour. The views from the top are fantastic and there are a couple of bars where you can get a drink or a snack if required. If you walk up you can pass through the ruins of the town the French destroyed. Its a little creepy. There is a bit of fencing that seems like it might have been intended to keep people out, bit its been displaced and thousands of people must be ignoring it every year.

very impressive especially at night

The statue stands atop the entire valley and is most impressive, especially when it is lit up at night.

Fantastic View From Up Here
Sep 2019
I was in Rio earlier this year, so when my friends said there was a Christ the Redeemer on a mountain in Italy, I said let's go for it. The ride up was exciting. Small road, steppingstones mountain, hairpin turns. When you reach the summit, there is a parking lot and you are charge 3 euros to take a very clean, prompt and efficient bus to the top of the hill. I have read some contributors griping about the cost. I did not think twice as that money was probably contributing to keeping the place clean and tidy. The walk up to the statue is impressive as the head and body begin to be seen. The views are spectacular. You can walk up to the base of the statue for a picture. I preferred to look out at the view and of course the statue against the sky. We bought drinks and sat outside a cafe terrace. Very peaceful. There was a coach waiting to take us down to the car where we paid a minimal fee for the parking lot. On our way down, we stopped in the town of Maratea. It was very quaint with a variety of tourist stores along with craft and jewelry stores. We had lunch in the square. It made for a great day trip.

Impressive!!

Our holiday home had a view on the Christo Redentore, and the statue totally fascinated me all week long, in the morning hours, in the clouds and lighted in the evening. Driving up however, with the shuttle service (1 € per person) from the parking lot €5), and standing in front of it, makes you realize the enormity of the statue. The views are stunning. Definitely worthwhile a visit.

A mini bus ride to the top and then small walk. Take time to have a drink in the small bar and give your self to take in the fabulous views

Worth the hike
Jul 2019 • Couples
Walked up to the statue twice and ran up once. The path is pretty clear although it could be better marked in some areas. I was pleased to see a garden/town crew cutting some of the shrubs to make the path more walkable. Once you get closer to the top, the views of the sea, the port, the mountains and the nearby towns are spectacular, and that breeze off the water on a hot day feels so cool! Once at the top, you see the very beautiful statue! So well worth visiting!

The Statue of Christo at Maratea
Jun 2019
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Pianetta Maratea (which was excellent - and reasonable) and hiked up the mountain to see the statue. Nice hike with moderate difficulty. The statue is 66' high and was installed in the 70s I think. Can't say I was all that impressed with the style of the statue but it was a good day trip.

Great view
Jul 2019 • Family
Even though there is not that much to do and to see, a short trio to the statue is recommended, as you get a fabulous view on the coast of Maratea. Parking will cost you about 5 EUR and the transport to the statue another EUR per person (round trip). Nice to do, but not a must
