Maratea Private tour: Italy's little bit of Rio

1 review
The tour of Maratea starts from the highest part of the city: Mount San Biagio. Here you can admire in all its beauty the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the symbol not only of the city of Maratea but of the whole region of Basilicata.

The second largest statue in the world as a dimension after Christ of Rio de Janeiro, the statue of Maratea is 21 meters tall, with a 19-meter arm opening and a face measuring 3 meters.

The statue was made of reinforced concrete covered with a mixture of white cement and Carrara marble and created by the artist Bruno Innocenti in 1965.

After admiring the Christ, the visit continues in the nearby Basilica of San Biagio, patron saint of the town.

The tour continues in the medieval village, with ancient houses with arches close to each other and divided only by narrow lanes and characteristic lanes that fociano in small squares paved in local stone.

Pebble beach with some rocks at the far end that gave nice seating if you don't travel with chairs and umbrellas. Clear sea and parking easy - even free spaces in mid-September but also large underground car park.

Beach not large, and pretty crowded. Water obviously great. Views are good, but it's stony. Small shop nearby, and parking (to pay for). Not worth a long drive.

I don't do beaches usually as I am beyong sand getting into everything. Visited this one as it's approach down from the main road gave the best view of the beach. I should imagine it's great fro families , as showed by the number there on the day we went.
