About
The Observatório Astronómico de Santana (Santana's Astronomical Observatory) is a Science Center in the Azores, part of the Azores' Region Science Center Network, that has science and educational outreach as its main goal, always focusing in the themes of astronomy and space exploration. Our activities are focused on the schools' science educational programs, providing adequate learning bases to all students. We too work for the community, giving our region the access to astronomical material and continued formation to all ages and social backgrounds. More than being a science center, our work is supported on outreach activities, bringing astronomy to people, whoever and wherever they are.

Small locally managed observatory
Oct 2019 • Couples
It’s a local observatory with an general education mission about astronomy. They have an evening program when their telescope is unveiled yo view the skies. The “dome” is an interesting feature, lie down and then view the movie on the origins of the universe. The staff are very amiable and seems knowledgeable.

Super place to visit

Went in on a wet day, 2 euros each, saw a movie in the planetarium first then a look round displays. Well worth a visit, small but low entry cost and very engaging informative place.

If you go in a sunny day you’ll get to use the telescope. We weren’t able to because it was a rainy day, yet we had a great time and learned a lot in this compact space. The tour guide was outstanding and the exhibits we’ll done and interactive. Good English translations. Watching a short film in the inflatable planetarium was a lot of fun!

What a wonderful facility- well worth visiting- English speaking staff

Excellent for Adults and children ,we attended an open evening which are normally on the first Friday of each month from 21 hr to 23 hr but as Friday was a holiday it was open on the Thursday evening.
They had some Physicists from Portugal doing experiments and education sessions amazing facility free entry.
Lots of hands on Experiments for children also an indoor planetarium.
Sadly we were unable to do any observing due to clouds the Azores also has problems with viewing due to humidity so not worth bringing your own telescope.
The staff were all fantastic and very enthusiastic , highly recommend a visit here,

Thank you very much for your enthusiasm and kind words. Indeed, bringing your telescope to the Azores might turn out to be an inconsequential hassle, but you can always find us to help you observe the still dark night sky of the Azores. Hope you can visit us again soon. Best regards.

I visited with my son on the last day of the holiday and wished we had a bit more time, we had our own private tour and were allowed to view the sun with telescopes set up out staff, we were also shown the main telescope and images gathered by it. There is also an exhibition and planetarium.

The staff were very helpful in showing us around and coping with the questions of a budding astrophysicist!

We came here for a few hours on the last day on the island. Although fairly small, the information inside is plentiful. The staff are really friendly and we had our own version of a private tour, given there was no one else around. Lots of activities for adults and children alike! The planetarium is great too.

For two euros each you can enjoy a 20 minute film in the planetarium and wonder around the exhibition. All in all and depending on your interest you can spend anything from 1 -2 hours here.

Well worth a visit.

The observatory is well worth a visit, it's not a huge place with massive telescopes and lots of technological wizardry but it is run by astronomers who are enthusiastic about their work and the subject which makes for a very interesting and informative 2 hours.

We started with a video inside a pop-up planetarium before heading off to look at the telescopes.
There are a couple of medium sized telescopes that they use to show you a variety of different objects and features in the night sky.
We saw Jupiter, Saturn, a globular nebula, a lagoon nebula and a binary star, all accompanied by a great commentary by Pedro.

You won't regret a visit here (so long as it's not cloudy)

Small but worth to visit
Aug 2017 • Family
This is a very small observatory but with some very interesting features. First the reception was very warm as I guess we were the fist visitors that day. A very nice lady guide us through the place for around 15 min explaining everything before giving us some time to explore on our own. The expositions are nice and informative but can be seen in half
an hour.
The two things that really stand out were the opportunity to watch the sun through 2 telescopes, which was very nice, and watch a movie inside a kind of air tent, which was very funny and interesting.
The price is very cheap, 1 € per person plus another 1 € to watch the movie, therefore there is an interesting value for money here.
It is worth to give it a try, but don't create too many expectations.

Thank you for your kind words. We are happy to have given you a good time. We're always doing our best to help create a fun way for everyone to learn more about Science and the Universe. And it is an honour to be recognized as such, dispite still being a humble but ambitius project. Next time you visit the Azores, do see us again: hopefully we will have much more to show you. Thank you again.
