Sant'oronzo plays an important role in the history of Lecce and nearby Ostuni. He towers over the Piazza. Don't just pass him by. Give him the time he deserves. It's like ignoring Nelson's Column in London if you just walk past.

This was built in 1592 at the request of the then mayor who must have liked tall spires because he did a good job and it is still standing. It sits adjacent to the Roman Amphitheatre and both are worth a visit.

Sant'Oronzo is the patron of Lecce commemorated on the column located on the main square of the city. The column was given to the city of Lecce by the city of Brindisi where people acknowledged that he cured the plague.

This particular column is more imposing than most, usually a sign that the memorial is of importance. Saint Oronzo, the martyred patron saint of Lecce, whose intercession was credited in alleviating the suffering of the town during the plague. That could merit gratitude I'm thinking.
