Low key but unique & impressive

A medieval fountain lined with 99 unique stoned faces whose origins and meanings remain shrouded in mystery.. Only a few steps from Ristorante Le Origini ( also known as Il Ristorante delle 99 Cannelle)--casual but sophisticated and not to be missed. Also a very short walk to the Museo Nazionale di Abruzzo, a small but lovely museum..

I have never seen anything like this before in our travels.

Imagine, this is the local laundry and the hustle and bustle of the place in a bygone age. Great to see it is in excellent condition given the many earthquakes it has been through.

This is a fountain located in a plain and quiet open space filled with history since the 1200's. 93 +6 water spours sorround the perimeter.

The tourist attraction in L'Aquila
Apr 2019 • Couples
The fountain is located at the edge of the historical town, next to one of the gates. Originally much smaller, it was expanded till well in the 20th century to now have 99 spouts, which symbolise the 99 villages that decided to cooperate and become L'Aquila. The fountain is restored and functioning, some of the spouts look new, and some are quite degraded. The wall has the same colour pattern as the basilica di Santa Maria di Collemagio e Porta Santa.

It wasn’t easy to get to as I decided to walk and not drive but it was worth the effort seeing the vast fountain with many fountains. A very special sight that’s worth visiting in L’Aquilla

Place to start

If you want to know the history of the city of l’Aquila, here is the best place to start, to “enter the city”.
You should also save time to visit the History Museum that is right there.

Difficult to get to, more bigged up than it is.

To get to this fountain you have to go down a very steep winding road (remember you have to go back up again!) and when we got there I felt a bit underwhelmed. Thought it would be quite an ornate, fabulous design to what you would expect of grand Italian architecture, but alas just a row of spouts of them in a pentagonal shape. I should've looked at photos before deciding to visit as I could've saved a lot of time and energy.

Visit if you feel fit, energetic and have time to kill because you have done everything else there is to do.

the fountain is very special, like the area where it is located, everything has been recently renovated, to be seen if one has stopped one day
