Historical artistical city walls where people go for a walk, cycling and jogging all day long. No cars are admitted. You can also take your pet here for a stroll.
Le antiche mura della città di Ferrara sono percorse tutti i giorni dai chi vuole passeggiare, correre o semplicemente portare il proprio cane a spasso.

Cycling Around the Medical Walls - Highlight of Our Day Trip
May 2019
The best thing we did in Ferrara was to hire bikes and ride around the outside of the medieval walls. You can also walk along the top of the walls but I'd recommend riding if you have the time.
Built mostly between 1493 - 1505, there are 9 km of walls. When they built it, they pulled out all stops to protect the city and used every defensive technique available in the 1400s. You can still many of these defences - city gates, solid bastions, large towers, arrowslits and a patrol path along the top. Smaller semi-circular towers were built at intervals along the path for the sentries.
The path is very safe and easy to follow. You ride entirely on shared bike/walking paths (not roads). For the most part, the paths are flat and even with loose gravel (see photos). You can build up a bit of speed if you want. There are no really hilly stretches although there are parts with slight inclines. It is all quite manageable and fun for kids.

TIPS:
• We hired the bikes from the Hotel Annunciata (Piazza Republica) but that’s only because we were nearby. There are several other places which may or may not be better value or have better bikes. This place had a number of regular bikes available. For half a day, we paid €7pp (€5 if you are a guest).
• Take some ID or a passport because you might need to show it to hire a bike
• We joined the bike path by riding across the main piazza and exiting via Corsa Porta Reno
• Wear older clothes. Even on a sunny day, there were some muddy puddles (there were only a couple but somehow I didn't pre-think this and wore white pants which was not a good idea).
• Take a water bottle - there wasn't anywhere to get water.

Well worth the visit
Sep 2019
Riding along the wall, with its shade trees and park is a great experience and a must in Ferrara. You can ride most of the way on top of the wall but there are also bike paths around it. There is easy access to the various key sites of the city from the perimeter.

Nice wall and park
Jun 2019 • Couples
We went to view the wall down Via Quartieri by Porta San Pedro. There was a nice green park with paths on the other side of the wall. There were also benches and a drinking fountain.

Stunning medieval walls
Jun 2019 • Solo
I found myself in Ferrara late on a midweek evening, with not much traffic, and by total coincidence my drive home took me past the majority of the length of the walls which were lit up - a stunning sight.

Even better, walk, run or cycle around them. In most areas there seems to be one path on top of, and one below, the walls.

Unlike some other Italian cities (e.g. Verona) the walls have been very well maintained and integrated into the modern city as a place of greenery.

Nice to ride with a bicycle, quiet beautiful and with views upon the old city
Feb 2019 • Couples
You can easily access them with a bicycle and the very large trees that are planted as a promenade on the walls make the trip all the more pleasant.

Really cool to be able to not only see the old walls but also walk on top of them. Lots of people watching in the evening.

Take the Time
May 2018 • Couples
The almost complete ancient walls that circle the city are a WOW...really. After visiting the Monastero di San Antonio in Polesine we walked to via Quartieri nearby. This road took us through the Porta San Pietro to the walking path outside the walls. This section was built in the 16th century and is particularly stunning with bastions in the shape of spades. From there you can decide how long you wish to walk. Take the times.

Lovely walk or bike ride !
May 2018 • Family
A nice way to relax and get some exercise. Within minutes from the historical city centre are some beautiful parks and trails that follow the almost intact city walls. There is a quiet countryside atmosphere and a feeling of safety as these green areas are well maintained and used frequently by locals and tourists without any entry fees,
