One of the best castle on the Cilento area
Aug 2020 • Couples
Beautiful medieval castle built in 1136 to defend the land against Saracens. These land in that time they were owned by the Benedictine monastery of the Holy Trinity of Cava dei Tirreni (74km away).
The decision to built the castle was made by the abbot Costabile Gentilcore and is the reason of it’s name : castle of the abbot

Interesting place to visit
Oct 2018
It is very interesting to visit 800 years old well preserved castle. It is open late in the evening, ticket is cheap. From castle entrance there is amazing sea-view, specially at sunset.

Typical southern Italy
Apr 2018 • Family
Rather charming and seemingly typical of every part of southern Italy we visited. Not a great deal to see inside but for a euro, that's fair.

Typical South Italy
Oct 2016
Castellabate is a small village at South Italy. A quiet nice place with a great view and the original Southern italian style.

Here you do not die
Oct 2016 • Family
When Gioacchino Murat came to Castellabate in November 1811 he said: Qui non si muori which translates to Here you do not die. He died soon after which is ironic.

Before you see Castellabate and the castle, please see the film Benenuti al Sud. It is a very funny comedy set in Castellabate. That is the reason we wanted to visit this town when we were nearby on the Amalfi Coast.

The town is AMAZING. It has all the charm of an Italian Village set high in the hills overlooking the sea. There are shops, restaurants and an old castle which is open to the public and costs next to nothing (one Euro) to visit.

If you are already visiting Salerno, it is less than an hour from there and the roads are good. Plan to stay for several hours or longer if you want lunch.

If you have seen the film then you will understand that when you come to Castellabate you cry twice. Once when you come and again when you have to leave. This a lovely destination and I give it a very big tick!
If my review is at all helpful, please give me a helpful tick too!

nice place on top of the hill
Jul 2016 • Couples
Nice place to visit. There isn't much to do, but the small streets with steps and old buildings are great to walk through. If you're in this area you should visit this nice small town.

Closed when we visited
May 2016 • Couples
It's important to check opening times and days. We walked around the village waiting for opening time only to realise it wasn't open that day at all. However the village itself is well worth a visit just for the views and cobbled streets. There are a couple of restaurants in the square plus a cafe if you want a meal or drink and a chill out.

Fantastic views from a beautiful setting. Windy roads to get up to top. A car is required or local bus. Wonderful for a wonderful around cobbled streets.

castle of the bishop
Jul 2015 • Family
Well preserved castle of a bishop, overlooking the hill town of castellabate and the bay. Mainly interesting for views, nothing much exhibited inside. Interesting underground tunnel, exciting for kids.
