Wow…. 30+ switchbacks either side, but managed to get a Tesla up to the top and over on a cloudy day…. Could not see all the switchbacks from the top, but what a journey. Lots of cyclist, and thankfully few cars made it east to do.
Food at top was pricey, and not very hygienic.

What’s more to say about this mountainroad. It offers great views, small curvy and steep roads, souvenirshops at the top and a good chance to see all european ski-teams practicing in the snow on top.

What a fabulous place to go. Named as the 7th or 8th toughest mountain climb on a road bike in Europe it’s worthy of its special position. We did it in snow and it made for an amazing adventure. Probably not very clever though on the way down. Watch out it gets incredibly cold on your hands and arms going down hill at speed. And yes we had every kind of top and under garment on! It’s just a killer! Watch out for black ice and be careful with the mountain tunnels! The views are fab but we missed it all due to snow and mist. But we enjoyed it still the same. An amazing adventure you’ll never forget. Enjoy!!

if there is a place in this world where you definitely want to be passed with the bike, it is the Stelvio.
not for the starting motard, but lovers of the better steering can indulge themselves here.

Hello experienced travelers, in late Oct 2022, I would be driving verona / peschiera del garda / desenzano de garda / lovere / varenna ... toward Milan. Then, I read about the Stelvio Pass. Google map seems to tell me it will take me 5h+ just driving up and down. Is it worthwhile to take such a detour to drive this special road when driving a rental car instead of a bike, motorcycle or convertible? Does it feel like a long and not-too-relaxing driving exercise? What is the fun of it other than being on the top to enjoy the panoramic view?
Will snow be a problem in later half of Oct? Would an ordinary rental car survive the hike, or do I need a 4x4?
I heard there are many different routes of going up and down the pass? How would recommend routing it on google map to be safer and not disrupting my planned itinerary too much?
Someone suggested staying at the hotel at the top to enjoy the view in the morning. What is the name of the hotel? Anyone has comments about that lodging? Are there things to do in the afternoon if I reach the top by noon (to avoid heavy traffic and fog) and am staying for the night?
Thank you very much in advance for your advice.

Gracias
