Ascoli-Piceno was a stopping point on our drive across Italy. We were with our Italian cousins who wanted to show us another quaint Italian town and some interesting sites. It was an overcast Friday afternoon, so there were not many people out and about. Since we had only an hour or so, we walked through, admiring the striking Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, stopping in at the Church of St. Francesco, and taking coffee at Caffe Meletti. I'm sure this Piazza would be a site in better weather and in the evening!

This is a lovely piazza, totally clad in local travertine. I live 30 meters from this place, and walk through it every day. It is really beautiful, but locals claim it is the most beautiful piazza in Italy!!! It is NOT. Tuscany has at least 3-4 which are far nicer, then there is the rest of Italy to consider. But do visit, too bad it is so cluttered with restaurant umbrellas and tables, but??? So, sit and have a drink! Try the famous olives which are really quite wonderful! Ascoli is surely worth a couple days' visit. But it's not very large, you can hit all the high spots in more in a day or two. (now bracing for the attacks!)

Piazza del Popolo is centrally located in the heart of the city and is surrounded by a medieval palazzo, porticoes and the Gothic Church of St Francis. There’s a lot to see here, concentrated in the one spot.
The two main historic sights are the church and the Palazzo dei Capitano de Popolo.
The 13th - 14th century palazzo is next to Meletti’s. It’s the one with two clocks and a tall, central tower. We sat on the front steps in the sun here and soaked up the piazza atmosphere. Later we watched as a large wedding party arrived and then appeared on the Romeo-and-Juliet style corner balcony on the top floor for photos.
The monumental Church of St Francis was started in 1258 but took some 300 years to finish (entry is free).
Attached to it and fronting onto the piazza, is a long, verandah-like structure - the Loggia dei Mercanti. This was built by the powerful guild of wool merchants in the 16th century. A small craft market was being held in the loggia when we were there and we were able to watch an interesting display of fine, traditional lace-making.
The highlight in the piazza is the historic, Michelin listed Caffe Meletti. This is where the aromatic herbal liqueur, Meletti, was first created in 1870. It’s definitely something to try while in Ascoli Piceno.

whilst in the piazza ask anyone to point you to piazza verdura or the vegatable market, about 50mts away, you will see daily no frills way of life of mainly farmers wives selling veg, fruit, poultry, cheese etc all home grown.Years ago the farmers usued to start out from their farms in the early hours with a cart laiden with produce to sell.A bit of old Ascoli that has gone on for years. With the clock in the piazza on your right walk past melletti thru a little rue and you arrive in Piazza Roma were you will find a daily market.Turn right on the main road by the market after 400mts arrive at Porta Maggiore were you will find the ruins of a Roman ampytheatre.[excuse spelling]

This piazza is truly one of the loveliest in Italy with the travertine pavement and Renaissance layout. Whether in daylight or at night this piazza is where the people of Ascoli Piceno come to see and be seen.

The piazza is more than an attraction, it is the social heart of the city of Ascoli Piceno. While there we celebrated and partook in the many festivals occurring. The Piazza has many small shops along with vendors parked along the perimeter. Cafe Melletti is also in the far right corner if using the picture above to get proximity.

One of two lovely piazzas in the town. Especially beautiful at night when all the surrounding buildings are lit up. Be sure to eat or get a coffee at one of the restaurants to soak up the view

Looks straight out of an Italian movie. The travertine pavement and the perfect shaped square creates a wonderful vibe day or night. A must see

Beautiful at night, when the church tower bells ring. Also plenty of shopping in and near the square. The square also holds several cafes, the best of which is Cafe Melitti's.

I love this piazza. I first visited it about 20 years ago and am so thankful it hasn't changed much. This really feels like Italy to me and, thankfully, hasn't really been discovered by tourists. I especially enjoy coming here in the early evening, sitting on the steps of the city hall and watching people of all ages enjoy the evening. I've been to other out of the way Italian cities with few tourists but all of those have been smaller towns where the piazza wasn't as large, or as grand, and the number of locals was too small to get a good sense of place.

Thanks for reading. I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.
