most beautiful square in Italy
Feb 2021
We stayed at an hotel right by the square. Simply amazing. Try to stay there and have a good aperitivo at one of the cafés on the square.

One of my favorite Piazzas in all of Italy!
May 2019
Great restaurants and shopping. Beautiful medieval city. The fact that it is slanted makes it so unique. Was not able to enter the cathedral because it was closed, but it is lovely on the outside. I simply love Arezzo!

Piazza Grande a daily visit!
Nov 2019
Dined at several restaurants on the Piazza and all were excellent. We were there everyday and were there for the Christmas village. Everything was lit up for the coming Christmas season with beautiful light shows on the buildings. The children lined up to see Baba Natale and Mickey Mouse added to the air of excitement and expectations! We loved having after dinner drinks and watching the activities when the place came alive in the evening.

One of the most beautiful Piazza's I have ever seen.
Oct 2019
I found myself almost overwhelmed by this piazza. It is so different from most of the Piazzas in Tuscany, which tend to be flat because they were designed for sporting events - chariot or bare-back horse races or even football pitches. This huge piazza breaks all the rules as it has an uneven shape and stretches downhill but it has a spine-tingling charm - especially when you remember Roberto Benigni, together with screen wife and son hurtling downwards in La Vita e Bella!

Lovely, colourful public square in the old town but an unusual shape and on quite a slope.
Jul 2019
The Piazza Grande started life as a medieval market place back in the 13th century but has changed both its shape and purpose over the centuries with the construction of a number of different architecturally attractive buildings around its edges. It is now the bustling civic and communal centre of the city with lots of restaurants and cafes around its edges as well as lots of locals and tourists.

The Piazza now has a trapezial shape and has quite a slope down the hill from the Palazzo delle Loge, an attractive building at the top of the Piazza that was built during the 16th century. The pavement is largely red brick whilst there is a square patch of grass in the middle which breaks up the brick work. There is also a small attractive well in one corner at the bottom of the hill.

The Piazza is surrounded by a mix of different architectural buildings from different centuries including the Palazzo delle Logge, the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici which dates from the 14th and 15th centuries whilst its clock tower and bell were added in the 16th century, the 17th and 18th century Palazzo del Tribunale. the colonnaded apse and rear of the 12th century Pieve di Santa Maria and, on the opposite side of the Piazza, the 13th century Palazzo Cofani-Brizzolari with the Torre Faggiolana and the tower house of the Lappoli family. Many of these buildings have very colourful flags and shields on their facades representing the colours and Coats of Arms of the different teams that compete in the Joust of the Saracens.

The Piazza Grande is also the venue for the twice yearly Joust of the Saracens, a competition between the four quarters of the City and a very large antiques fair that is held on the first Sunday of the month.

Outstanding public space
Oct 2019
While everyone raves about the Campo in Siena (including me) there's something rather more intimate and workaday about Arezzo's Piazza Grande. With a gentle slope and some interesting buildings around, including an attractive loggia on the uphill side, it really is a joy, whether empty or when in use for the regular antique market. An excellent place for a meal or just coffee. Arezzo is an attractive down with this Piazza at it's heart and a number of other attractions, so if you're staying in Southern Tuscany you should most certainly consider a visit.

Magnificent
Oct 2019 • Couples
The Piazza Grande is stunning both at night (when it is lit beautifully) and during the day.

The buildings are gorgeous and the square is surrounded by restaurants and antique stores to browse through after you have taken in the beauty of the surroundings.

Arezzo is a beautiful city & the Piazza is it’s crown jewel!
