The name of the city is encrypted on the facade.
Aug 2019
The four towers of the 15th-century Gothic Cathedral represent the four evangelists. The facade is decorated with four bas-reliefs depicting the symbols of the four evangelists. Left in order: the angel of Matthew, the lion of Mark, the bull of Luke, and the eagle of John. The name of the city is encrypted in the first letters of these symbols in Italian-Angelo-Leone-Bue-Aquila. The 1878 sculpture of San Lorenzo by the Milanese sculptor Luigi Cocchio is located under the rose window. Saint Lawrence, the patron Saint of the city, is especially loved by Catholics because of his martyrdom (he was roasted alive on a grill). We couldn't go inside because of the memorial service. This is not a procedure where tourists will be in place.

Old and modern - inviting for everyone
Sep 2019
This church manages to combine antiquity and modernity and to create a space of devotion and joy. Rarely has a church taken me more - at first sight. Many thanks for that. Please note that the pictures on the front of the church with the corresponding names are abbreviated A.L.B.A..

Church located in city center
Sep 2019
A small church that visitors can go behind the altar to view the choir area and the various types of marble used to build the church. One of the many small town churches in Italy.

Fine Romanesque Cathedral
Sep 2019
I have a particular affection for these giant brick Romanesque Cathedrals and this is a fine example inside and out, albeit with some Baroque/Rococo features. There are lovely variegated pillars and beautiful blue colouring on the ceiling. Also nice to see some Roman remains under a glass floor. Look out for the interesting legend of St Theobald. The historic centre of Alba really is lovely and the piazza in front of the Duomo and open space around it allows a good appreciation of this fine building.

Loved the ruins under glass!

This church is in the heart of Alba and is a great site to see. It is one of the few churches where you are allowed to explore behind the altar.

Beautiful square and cathedral - a hidden gem
Jun 2019 • Friends
Alba is a hidden gem in itself - although getting more and more popular! - and San Lorenzo was a true surprise for me. The square and the front are lovely, and the interior of the cathedral is truly impressive and interesting. I absolutely recommend it.

Such a beautiful church , outside and inside! In the heart of Alba! You can spend some time there , then have a coffee near the church, with that beautiful view by your side.

My favourite cathedral

Breathtaking interior, spectacular colours, beautifully maintained with delightful chapels. Excellent guide notices in English will help you to understand the history of this magnificent building.

An historic cathedral that is not stuck in time.
Apr 2018 • Solo
We like our churches old, but don’t expect them to evolve in ways that are recognizable. Here is a church founded in the 11th century. It has been cared for, renovated, and restored for centuries (you can Google the history and details), but what I really appreciate about this cathedral is the very modern chandelier (for lack of a better term) that hangs above the alter. I know nothing about it, but it’s like a constellation of stars. It reminds us (or me) that we also have a place in history; we might not see it now — just as generations of artists and parishioner throughout the ages gave little thought to our 21st-century reaction — but it signaled to me that tourists in the next millennium will look at this light fixture as something antiquated. So many churches seem artificially stuck in time; this bridges past and present. And now I feel a part of history.
