Inspiring
Sep 2019
The passage of time has not been kind to the cathedral, the entrance is evidence of severe damage, but inside a genuine sense of peace and calm endures and a strong sense of grandeur remains.

Splendid stained glass, in itself this made the visit entirely worthwhile.

A combination of easy parking right next to the cathedral and several acceptable eateries nearby help to make any visit a very agreeable experience.

First time we have come to the town.

We had booked up for the lights and music show in the evening. So we had a look around the cathedral in the afternoon. What a fantastic place, the French do know how to build churches and cathedrals.
The lights and music show in the evening was just amazing. It told the history of the cathedral. A lot planing and preparation went it to getting it right. Well done to the Cathedral people.

Off the beaten track: a glorious gothic cathedral
Jul 2019 • Friends
In a triangle between the Normandy beaches, Le Mans and Chartres, a more "anonymous", but important medieval gothic cathedral can be found: Notre-Dame of Sées.
Built in the 13-14th century and with several exceptional features, it's well worth a detour.

The choir and transept is particularly elegant in the stunning lightness and airiness the architects of French gothic style wanted to achieve.
Two 70 m spires, marvellous stained glass windows (especially the bow windows in the transept) from the 13-14th century and overall beautiful building proportions.

The cathedral also hosts one of the finest organs built by the famous organ builder Cavaillé-Coll in the 19th century.

Much restored, rebuilt and maintained throughout the centuries and with the absence of tourist hoards, it's a must see.

What a gem !

For a town the size of Sees we were genuinely surprised and please by the size, elegance and grandeur of the cathedral.
Set in a nice area of the town and also associated with the historic walk that is also well sign-posted.

Lunch stop on way south
Aug 2018 • Family
I randomly picked Sees as a place to stop for lunch on our way down to the Loire Valley and it was a very good choice. It's a 10 minute drive from the motorway and there's plenty of parking in the centre right next to the cathedral. Across the road there are several small restaurants and a handy boulangerie. There are also decent public toilets just behind the town hall next to the cathedral.

The cathedral itself is beautiful, an oasis of calm. There was a wedding rehearsal with a choir singing which sounded amazing. Well worth a visit.

Hidden Gem
Aug 2017 • Couples
Visited Sees cathedral on a pretty miserable August day. It was quiet inside, quite a contrast to some of the 'megastar' cathedrals of France, but Sees is in fact very architecturally significant, hence the long journey we took to see it.
Sees represents the mature expression of the Rayonnant style, and retains a large portion of its medieval glazing. Since it's not teeming with tourists you get an excellent sense of its proportions from walking around and the awesome power of the church in the middle ages, to build such a gigantic church overlooking such a sleepy town.
There are only a few cathedrals out there that can match it for quantity and quality of old stained glass and they tend to be teeming with visitors. The austere beauty of Sees has a moving effect, regardless of your religious views.
