Palazzo Vetus is located in the central Piazza della Libertà, its construction dates back to around 1170. It had the function of Broletto in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, therefore the center of political, administrative and judicial life of the medieval town. After many vicissitudes in 1856 the Municipality of Alessandria ceded it to the State made it the seat of the guard of the Division Command. Until 1995 the building housed the Presidio and the Military District and, from 1 September 2012, it became the headquarters of the Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria Foundation which fully financed its restoration. The building has lost many of its original characteristics, the last restorations have however brought to light numerous architectural elements from the Middle Ages including one of the two courtyards surrounded by a portico with pointed arches, a trifora window and various vaulted ceilings and covered with frescoes including the one depicting the first representation of the coat of arms of the city of Alexandria: a red cross on a white background. There remains a precious testimony of the foundation of the municipality of Alessandria.
