Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour.A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait.

Worth 5 stars if only for the Whistler mural. Make sure you ask the guide lots about it. More rooms to see would be nice but well presented and very friendly guides.

My wife and I have been NT members for 35 years. This was the only property we visited last year. On arrival, we were told it was full and were advised to go elsewhere. As pensioners we felt that our treatment was appalling. Why on earth are we paying our membership fee?

We visited this National Trust location during a drizzly afternoon, so perhaps didn't see the gardens at their best. However, the grounds are extensive and worth exploring. Equally there is plenty to see in the house, and there is a cafe/restaurant at the end of the tour to satisfy all needs.

This house and garden has an excellent location overlooking the Menai Strait. The mansion itself is not at all attractive to my eye. Really a very plain if not ugly building. The inside is typical of aristocratic country houses. Full of the family portraits and the ephemera of the Earls of Anglesey. Nothing significant in terms of art works or... More

My wife and I visited with friends, all of us over 70, and enjoyed our visit. The setting was beautiful especially as it was fine and sunny. It was useful having golf buggy transport available for our return up the hill and convenient for people less able than ourselves. We were a little disappointed with the house but felt it... More

There's plenty to see and admire at this stately old pile but to be honest you need look no further than the awesome Whistler mural and displays of his early work which makes you realise what a genius the guy was. Its a genuine "must see" for anyone and everyone with a scintilla of interest in English art history. If... More

As National Trust members we regularly visit this area. We have taken the grandchildren who love the adventure playground. Rex Whistler's mural never ceases to amaze us. Every time we see it, we see something different. The guide is excellent in pointing out different features to look for. Sometimes we just visit the house and gardens but then again it's... More

We'd been to Penrhyn Castle the day before which is stunning and another National Trust property. Plas Newydd is beautiful on the outside in a stunning location however, the inside was somewhat of a let down. Tired and in need of some work and money spent on it. Worth a visit but do it before Penrhyn Castle which is beautiful... More
