Libearty Bear Sanctuary is the biggest brown bear sanctuary from Europeand has the largest surface in the world. Here, 75 bears found a nice home in this 5 stars welfare facility. Here you can see happy bears in their natural environment, after a bad life in circuses and zoo cages. The tours are guided by trained animal welfare experts and the visitors can see brown bears really close.

You have to book to visit the sanctuary. The staff member who showed us around gave a very interesting account of the horrors the bears had been exposed to and of their lives now. An interesting visit though of course the bears are not in...More

This is a sort of recovering place for traumatized bears - with various backgrounds, yet all traumatized. A huge amount of work sustained by a handful of people, with great efforts. The place offers only guided tours, in Romanian and English. Entrance is only at...More

I'd been eagerly looking forward to visiting the Libearty Bear Sanctuary at Zarnesti because originally, I'd intended to go trekking with an organised bear watch team from Brasov. It would have taken me across the Carpathian Mountains to observe bears in the wild, in addition...More

This is an amazing place, non profit organisation, saving bears in Romania from a rubbish life, they were living in cages so small, some came from circus life, some kept in restaurants so sad, but they now have freedom in the sanctuary and don't need...More

The Liberty Bear Sanctuary in Zărnești comes highly recommended. It's definitely not a zoo or animal park: it's a sanctuary for captive or abused bears to recover and live in peace. However, you do get a great experience visiting this place. While the bears are...More

It was a sad but uplifting experience visiting the bear sanctuary. Our group guide was very informative about each of the bears here. They have big enclosures with plenty of space to live in and are lovingly looked after. It is just a very sad...More

We did the 10am tour of the sanctuary. By local standards it's not cheap to get in - but they are a charity so it all goes towards their work. We saw plenty of bears and were given interesting, sometimes very moving, background information on...More

Sad to hear the stories of how these bears ended up here but lovely to see them looking so well and cared for. Brilliant tour, last tour is at 11.00am. Well worth a visit.

Has anyone done the VIP tour at the sanctuary? I am going in a few weeks and absolutely love bears and want to see as many as I can but I am unsure if the VIP tour is worth it? Any help appreciated. I am booked on a bear hide watching trip to hopefully see them in the wild
