A breath of fresh air

Amazingly we saw only 3 people on our hour long walk around the reserve- !! there re so many walks and great views , and you have the sound of curlews with you all the time. It may not be for everyone but our whole family loved it.
Highly recommend for getting. away from it all!

You need to allow plenty of time for this one

We stopped for lunch here. I suppose it was my fault, but I didn't realise that it was a 40 minute walk to the information point and we really didn't have that amount of time. To be realistic you need to plan to spend at least half a day here. We will go back sometime in the future.

We called unfortunately with limited time for a walk; the reserve is HUGE so be prepared to spend some time there!

What a secluded and lovely RSPB if you fancy a good walk.

Visited on the off chance for a walk / birding spotting and we were VERY pleasantly surprised - what a smashing reserve. Plenty of walks (long / short) on well marked trails through: heath, wood, tarn, fields, old disused quarry .... a real mixed bag. Bird life was very good (although we went of a lovely sunny day). Limited parking. Small RSPB center (toilet facilities only).

Great for walks and bird life

Had a fantastic 2 hour walk here where we saw Black Grouse and a short eared owl hunting. Great scenery and a variety of routes available with different lengths and ascents. Not much parking however and information centre was a bit disappointing

good for walks

This is not a typical reserve with lots of hides, but a large area with good walks and open scenic countryside. Curlews and lapwings shout at you to keep away from their nest sites and the day I was there, a cuckoo was calling from a dead tree just above me.
Tip. If using the one hide overlooking the lake, you will need a scope. And it's quite a walk to carry it.

A peaceful beauty spot.

The reserve covers a huge area so although it is well visited you can walk here without seeing anyone. Beautiful wild hillside, moorland, beck and tarn and industrial history. There's been a lot of tree planting so it will be enjoyable to see how the scenery changes as the woodlands grow. Fabulous view right across to the solway firth & Scotland from the high ground. A bird hide by the tarn and lots of wildlife to see (red squirrels if you're very lucky). The RSPB visitor centre at Stagsike Cottages is worth a visit (apart from the public loo!!) and there are often exhibitions there by local artists. Geltsdale is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas in England.

Lovely views over the countryside

We'd hoped to perhaps see Black Grouse, but were instead rewarded with Kestrels and Buzzards. All in all a lovely walk through the newly planted hillside.

This small reserve has a few different walking routes plus a tarn with a hide to look for both birds and mammals.

I spent two hours walking one of the trails. I took my time and was busy birdwatching and photographing wildlife most of the time. There is a good variety to see in this very peaceful area. I recommend it highly.
