The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage...

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and education at its heart. Climb on-board a steam or heritage diesel train on one of the earliest and most historic lines. Experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. We will take you on a journey you can’t even imagine!

Explore the Railway

• Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the locomotive steam era.

• A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.

• Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines!

• Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.

• Explore Levisham Station which is surrounded by the North York Moors.

Seriously considered a trip on this railway, until we looked at the prices. Pickering to Grosmont £24 off peak return? You must be joking. Like the hopeless and pathetic National Rail network, this heritage railway is obviously just a complete rip-off. Time to get a reality check!

We were recommended to try the railway by a relative who had travelled on it many times previously. We booked out ticket in advance via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway website which was very quick and easy to use and we travelled from Whitby, where we were staying, all the way to end of the line in Pickering. We planned... More

Easter Sunday lunch - fine dining on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Firstly, a big thank you to the staff at Whitby station who ensured we didn't miss the train. Late arrival and departure of the Northern Rail train to Grosmont could have scuppered a 60th birthday treat. Having radioed ahead the train was held for the arrival of the... More

Highly recommended! Interesting experience. We bought the Pickering to Whitby tickets so that we could hop on and off the different stations along the way. Remember to pick up the day's train schedule from the ticket office. We were staying in York so did this as a day trip. We took the 0740 train from York station to Malton station... More

Everyone loves a steam train and this is a lovely day out. We took the 11.00 from Pickering to Grosmont which took just over an hour which we felt was long enough but it seemed to go quite quickly. We returned after an hour and a bit in Grosmont which is a pretty village with pub and cafes and the... More

This is a well looked after attraction with very friendly staff. Train rides cost a little bit more than other railways we have visited and some parts of the journey get a bit tedious due to the line passing through quite dense woodland. It's well worth the wait though as when you get up into the moors the views are... More

Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your trip. I'm afraid that the woodland is not on NYMR property so is out of our control. We would recommend that families bringing small children bring colouring books, or whatever, to keep them entertained if travelling the full length of the line. More

Lovely day out from Pickering to Whitby on the 09.25. Easter Saturday and the train crowded luckily we booked tickets in advance. Weather was prefect and we've never seen so many primroses and cowslips in the hedgerows. We were surprised at the number of passengers who had brought along their dogs, which if you're not a dog lover is very... More

Thank you for your review. We're very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your trip and saw lots of lovely spring flowers. We're sorry to hear that you were inconvenienced by thoughtless dog owners. The railway runs from Whitby to Pickering in the heart of the North York Moors. Diesel and Steam trains run daily and it's worth checking the timetable if you want to ensure you are steam-hauled. A great day out is to park at Grosmont, take the train to Goathland for lunch (the station is actually Hogsmead railway station in the... More

Thank you for a great review. Just a few comments - We do say in our brochure that Goathland Station was used as Hogsmeade. Heartbeat is still aired all over the world so will probably bring tourists into Goathland for many years to come. Pickering market day is Monday. We're pleased to hear that you had such an enjoyable time... More
