Housed in what was intended to be England's first agricultural college, this fine historic building is Pickering's hidden gem. We have 27 rooms or areas of separate displays, covering many aspects of local, social and family history, militaria and everything weird and wonderful. Thousands of objects are thoughtfully displayed in re-created period shops throughout the building. On our special event days we have a number of working craftspeople, covering such crafts as Printing, Blacksmithy, Costumery, Rag-rugging. Lacemaking, Quilling, Quilting, Spinning, Butter making etc. We have an Activities Room where children may play Victorian games, a riverside picnic area, a gift shop, modern toilets including disabled facility and baby changing unit, disabled access and DVD for disabled visitors. We are open 7 days a week from February to November 10 a.M. To 4 p.M.

Offers a fascinating insight into the past of the Pickering district. Most visitors will really enjoy the recreated 'shops' (which include a village store, a gents' outfitter, a barber, a pub, a chemist, a printer and an ironmonger), but for me the highlight was the simply wonderful black and white photographs of the Sydney Smith Collection. They depict everyday life... More

We thank you for taking time to review our museum, in our 27 areas of exhibits we display many items covering the way our locals earned their living in days gone by. On our specialist craft days many of our displays are brought to life as local crafters demonstrate how the tools and equipment were used. More

Went here with two children aged 14 and 11 on a wet day (Storm Doris was blowing though) during a family holiday. Ended up thanking the horrible weather rather than cursing it as if it had stayed nice we wouldn't have visited. Excellent, small museum with just the right balance of interest for children and adults alike. The quality and... More

We try to cater for all ages in our 27 areas of display, many of our visitors are of an age where they recognise and/or have used many of the types of item on display, but we also cater for the younger visitor in our Victorian schoolroom where the younger person can have hands-on time with the games etc set... We intended a quick visit with my eight year old grandson but he found enough to keep him interested for three hours. The volunteers who explained the various practical exhibits in the rooms were enthusiastic and a fund of knowledge. The museum looks small from the outside but this is deceptive as it covers two floors with outbuildings and a... More

One of the advantages of our new entry charging system is that you can return for 12 months at no extra cost for as many visits as you wish, which is very useful with the time necessary to see our 27 areas of exhibits. We try to appeal to all ages and our education room with it's attractions for children... More

We enjoyed our visit, the staff were very friendly, we were amazed at how much you can get into a small space, it told the history of the local area, well worth going, entrance tickets are valid for 12 months so go as many times as you wish.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our museum and post a short review, we do our best to advertise our presence round the town especially in the town centre, but the closure of our Tourist Information Centre has affected many attractions in the town. More

While it looks small from the outside, Beck Isle just goes on and on, and has some fascinating collections in it's recreated rooms and shops. Well worth a look if you have a couple of hours to spend.

We visited the museum having taken the steam train from Whitby to Pickering. It's located just around the corner from the railway station. It offers an insight to life in a Yorkshire market town from the early 20th century. There were several recreations of shops - tailor, chemist, toy shop, haberdashery and my favourite, a Victorian pub. There were lots... More
