Nature day out from Tallinn
Sep 2019
We had a rental car and spent the whole day driving and walking around different spots in the park on our way from Narva to Tallinn. Beieng Estonia's largest National park it certainly lives up to it's reputation offering a variety of natural landscapes from Bogs to waterfalls and the Gulf of Finland.
We visited the Altja Fishing Village, the Viru Bog and the Jagala Waterfall. All different and unique in their own way. Try and time your visit so you can have lunch at Altja Fishing village where there is a nice restaurant.

I would recommend 2.5 hours at Altja including lunch. 1-2 hours at the Viru Bog up to the viewing platform. and around 30 minutes at Jagala waterfall. We wish we had more time to try and do a few more walks in the area.

Best natural area in Estonia
Jun 2019 • Couples
Estonia is about half forest but this area is the place to hike if you want a sense of the landscape. We hiked the Kasmu Hiking Trail (warning 15 km but there are places to cut off) and got a very good sense of the coastal region as well as the internal forest. Make sure you bring bug spray in summer and watch out for large ant nests, especially on the west side of the peninsula. Flat terrain all the way so don't expect large and expansive views.

A perfect day trip from Tallinn
Jun 2019 • Solo
Lahemaa, Estonia's largest national park is certainly worth a visit. Only an hour by car from Tallinn and the roads in the park are excellent. It has a lot on offer, so you have to choose if you only go 1 day. I stayed 3 days in Lahemaa and wasn't bored for 1 minute. I saw the lovely coastline with boulders in Käsmu and Altja, spent a pleasant afternoon on a very nice beach in Võsu. I visited 2 manors Palmse and Sagadi, both equally grand. Just pick one. Plenty of wooden houses, but the most beautiful are in Käsmu.
A lot of forest ofcourse with many trails. The Viru bog trail is the best with a viewing tower in the middle. The Käsmu nature and culture trail with the many boulders is also good. Another good one is the bever trail.
Something totally different was the urban-explorer-style visit to the abandoned Soviet submarine base.
And also important I found excellent restaurants.

Educating trail Viro Swamp
Jun 2019 • Family
If you are interested in nature, do go there. It's a wooden trail through the swamp accompanied with information stands re the local flora and fauna and nature/characteristics of the swamp. It's about 3 km long one way, you can return the same way or go out and go back through the wood. Navigation should know; Viro swamp or in our case it was: Болото Виру. Free of charge, open all year round all day long.

Perfect tour for every season
May 2019 • Family
If you're looking for somewhere quiet to relax and enjoy the nature around you, or simply somewhere to retreat and take a break from busy life, I highly recommend this tour. Thanks to Hannes Ausmees, our guide, me and my mum had an amazing time, definitely we were not disappointed.

Great day out from Tallinn
May 2019 • Couples
Start at the visitor centre in Palmse to get a fine insight into what to see. We then did Sagadi, Altja, Vergi, lunched at Vosu, walked out to the Baltic at Kasmu and came back via the bog walk near Kolga. Such variety and native beauty in a day. The roads are excellent and only the bog is not easy to find given good signage. In May the vegetation was far behind the UK but the birds we saw were majestic - heron, swans, skuas, etc. To get the best out of this area you need to know its history and understand its geology. The Palmse visitor centre has all this if you have not read up in advance.

Lovely to see how this country free from Soviet chains since 1991 is propering and the amount of summer homes there are set in this remote forest area.

Wonderful even in wintertime
Jan 2019 • Couples
It is a lovely national park to drive around in. It is a beautiful, frozen and snowy landscape in wintertime, but I imagine it is even more impressive and varied in the summer. The snow covers up some of the diversity in terms of the very typical bog plantlife, but it is nonetheless beautiful. Nice, quiet area and free to visit. I would pay attention to avoid driving in the dark in the wintertime though as the smaller roads are more snowy and slippery.

The national park has varied attractions with villages and farmland in between. We did many walks - the Viru Bog Trail, the Oandu Old Growth Forest Trail, the coastal and forest walk at Kasmu. There is an excellent art gallery at Vinistu.

Nice place to visit
Jul 2018 • Couples
Somehow the bus driver got lost and we lost some time but when we finally got there, we split up in a group that went swimming and a group that went to the lookout tower. The water is clear and not too cold but we went pass the swimmers to the tower. Took nice pictures. It was very hot - so take water and sunscreen and a hat because although some stretches of the path is through trees, other parts are crossing water and grass fields. The path is wooden planks above ground level and very nice to walk on, but some places very narrow and it is difficult to pass people coming from the opposite direction.
