Only one mile from Hartland Quay, Hartland Abbey lies across a narrow, sheltered valley which winds its way to the spectacular Atlantic Coast. Within a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ visitors may wander around the beautiful gardens and grounds which lead to the rocky cove. Peacocks and guinea fowl roam at will, whilst donkeys and Black Welsh Mountain sheep graze the Old Deer Park.Hartland Abbey is the lived-in family home of the Stucley family. Although it was built in the 12th century, remaining as a monastery for 400 years and passing through the female line three times, it has never been sold. Consequently, it contains collections of pictures, furniture and porcelain which have accumulated over many generations. The story of the Abbey mirrors local and national history at every turn. It has a friendly and lived-in atmosphere, so often absent in many of our nation’s historic houses, a point continually remarked upon by those who visit us.

The house is lovely to visit s bit of a walk to the gardens. Good parking. Watch out for the entrance signs as we drove passed as a van in front of the sign. It's green and easy to see normally. Great staff and a great place to visit .

this was a beautiful place. however!, buying tickets a shambles. 2 staff and had a queue with 3 people. then one of the staff left and went to give talk in the abbey. this was like a route march. deterred from leisurely walk through. on deciding to look at walled garden, take note this is at the entrance to grounds.... The house and the grounds are beautiful. At £12+ a head it is expensive for a family. The cafe is quaint with a limited home made type menu, again not cheap, The walk down to the beach is a long country mile and back again. Take your time and enjoy and forget the money.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and thank you for your kind comments. I am sorry that you did not buy a family ticket which would have been cheaper as a family. The entry price includes 20% VAT to start with! We have wonderful staff to pay, the house to maintain for the future,... More

We found this on our satnav what a find. Everyone was so helpful. We went for a walk to the gazebo it was a lovely sunny day and the trees reflected lots of dapple shadows on to the floor. As you come out of the trees the gazebo is in front of you, but its the coast line that is... More

unfortunately it was a very wet day when we visited but we still walked down to the beach and up to the walled garden. The tour was good.

Thank you so much for your comments. I am afraid we do try very hard to organise good weather but it doesn't always happen! I am glad you enjoyed the interior of the Abbey. We now have a Film Exhibition open too so that visitors can be undercover while it is raining, even if they only have tickets to the... More

While the house is OK (though the guides are wonderfully enthusiastic), the real beauty here is in the gardens and the magnificent walks to the beach and sea at Black Pool. The round walk from the sea to Hartland Quay and back via Stoke is really worth it. All the staff are wonderfully helpful and there is plenty to do... More

We are so pleased that you enjoyed the gardens and grounds so much. Late April/early May is a wonderful time to visit when the bluebells and tulips are still out and the rhododendrons and azaleas are just coming into flower. The walk to the beach is at its best too while everything is so springlike. Thank you so much for... More

As we stayed at Hartland Quay Hotel we visited lots of local attractions. Hartland Abbey is a pearl of Devon! Nature and architecture are in pure harmony! The gardens are pure pleasure for eyes. The cream tea adds more charm to the relaxing atmosphere. You can feel time stop and you are blessed!

Thank you so very much for such a lovely review. We are so thrilled that you really felt the atmosphere. The monks really knew where to build their abbeys! I will pass on your kind comments to Nigel in the gardens and to Kath and Jo in the tea rooms. Everyone works so hard to do their best to give... More

Do not miss this gem if you are visiting North Devon. We walked to the abbey from Hartland along a scenic woodland trail. Upon arrival, we ascended a well worn path to the summerhouse, descended to the gazebo, and then accessed Blackpool Mill Beach. Turning back, a twenty-minute walk past Welsh Mountain Sheep, donkeys, Jersey cows, guinea fowl, and peacocks... More

We came specifically to do the walk from the Abbey to the coast, and chose this time of year because we saw an article in a magazine about the magnificent Bluebell woods. We really enjoyed it, and can honestly say it was the biggest display of bluebells we have ever seen! We also explored the rest of the estate, including... More

Thank you so much for your much appreciated remarks. I am afraid Bluebell Sunday was so busy with so many visitors! I am so glad you loved the bluebells. this year they have looked so wonderful and are still flowering on the north facing slopes!
