- mrsdoyle_161 contributionsLovely walkLovely walk, 11km return on my fitbit, took 2hrs20m and we stopped twice for approx 4 mins each time.Park at the 'paid' parking as nearest to starting point. Nearest toilets is Marble Caves 1 min by car. The walkway is gravel for 3km until the boardwalk. The wood is not slippy in wet weather as they have chickenwire stapled on it which is a great idea.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 April 2024
- SteRKildare, Ireland578 contributionsExcellent trek , great scenaryExcellent trek , great scenery . Was running late so emailed John, very understanding. Always pre-book bottom carpark as is an extra few Kms from the other carparks in the area. Boardwalk is great on a sunny day and the last part is tough but really doable when you take your timeVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 June 2024
- HBC322Swords, Ireland82 contributionsGreat spot for fantastic viewsHighly recommend hike/walk. Parked for 5stg close to the gravel path that leads to the boardwalk. Take your time, appreciate the fabulous views along the way and getting to the top will be OK! Very steep steps but all , young and young at heart, managed it!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 June 2024
- Wander242257980691 contributionGreat walkIt is a steep, moderate hike to get to the top. Took us 2 hours 45 minutes, great walk and hike, well worth it for the view at the top. The landscape is exposed and was quite windy so dress appropriately especially if the weather changes. We parked at the car park with the brown sign saying cuilcagh boardwalk. It is £5 which is closer for starting the walk. Would highly recommend this walk, challenging but lovely view at the top.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2024
- Marie BSligo, Ireland3 contributionsDefinately a Stairway to Heaven Just Fabulous with Incredible ViewsHighly recommend the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail also known as Ireland’s Stairway to Heaven, it is a must visit if you in Northern Ireland. It is situated in the beautiful Cuilcagh Mountain Park in County Fermanagh. It is the most fabulous boardwalk hike with incredible views and a picturesque wooden walkway. The Stairway to Heaven title arose from the final section of wooden steps that climb to the summit of Cuilcagh Mountain and its panoramic viewing deck. The views from the top are truly spectacular. The hike is achievable for anyone of moderate fitness and we met people of all ages and fitness levels at the top of the boardwalk. Myself and my husband done the trail last week and my husband lost a new digital watch, we want to honour the Sheridan Family John and Ken for returning my husbands watch, they found it, let us know straight away and kept it safe for him. We were so thrilled and so lucky to get the watch back and we are so grateful. Its reassuring for tourists to know that if they happen to loose something on the walk there is a good possibility of getting it back and that cannot be said for many places, well done Stairway to HeavenVisited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 July 2024
- Seasoned travellersJersey, United Kingdom135 contributionsChallenging walk with great views when you reach the summitDo not underestimate the steepness of this walk. The uphill gravel path is challenging and once you hit the boardwalk, whilst it does then get easier, there are circa 500 steps when you hit the wooden railings. The views at the top are breathtaking and do make the trek feel worthwhile. Make sure you have some water and are wearing comfortable shoes. Parking is £5€6. Completed for the first time October 2023, said never again, but we did it again September 2024. It didn’t feel any easier.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 September 2024
- BDP1United Kingdom67 contributionsVery strenuous and with some good views on a clear day.A very strenuous hike with some good views on a clear day. Good footwear, suitable clothing and refreshments are needed. Free car parking is available at The Marble Arch Caves or the nearby Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail toilet facilities and picnic area although both require some road walking to reach the start of the trail. Or you can pay £5 / €6 cash to a local at the start of the trail to park there. There are no toilets along the trail route. Overall, most people will get a sense of satisfaction after completing this tough walk.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2024
- Craig G1 contributionClimb to the CloudsTook to the hiking trail on the Stairway to Heaven and WOW what a tremendous hike. Started off in the free parking area and had reserved our time for arrival. The day was cloudy, drizzly with a bit of wind - but being dressed for this "epic" Irish weather made all the difference. We both are over 60 and appeared to be the oldest out on the trail this day - a Sunday. As you start the trail we looked all the way across the bogs thinking "we have to walk all the way over there?" Couldn't see the top of the mountain due to the fog so knew this was going to be special. After a couple miles we made it to the boardwalk and the hike continued. It was amazing to see how the stairway just disappeared into the clouds as you climbed. At the top we had a view of about 20 meters - so no awe inspiring vistas. But it was still quite glorious. 15 miles round trip from the free car park. Great adventure. Mark this off my bucket list as I'd had cancer this past year and didn't know if my stamina would hold out. It did without a doubt and my spouse and I talked about this hike throughout the remainder of our time on the Irish Isle and to this day. Come early as this can be very busy, especially now that coronavirus restrictions are relaxed. There are two car parks, the lower one means a longer walk, but both cost £5 for a car. If you love mountain walks, this is for you. The first part of the walk is a gravel path which is wide enough to cater for all the walkers, then you move on to a narrow board walk - this has chicken wire on it for grip, and is a little springy, which makes the walk softer on the legs. It's narrow though, one person in each direction. Then there are steps up to the final stage - it can be energetic, but take it at your pace. Time up 1 hour 15 from the upper car park, an hour down.

After reading reviews I decided to write my own as some comments just to be clearer (but generally fine). This is for inexperienced people as experienced people won’t need this.
It’s €6 or £5 for parking. We parked in the first car park but there’s actually a higher second car park further up the walk. The second car park is nearer to the board walk start. Either car park costs €6 or £5. A man in a car collects this with a high vis vest. This is cash only and I don’t know if this money contributes to the upkeep of the boardwalk. There isn’t a toilet in either car park.
It’s 2.7 miles (4.3km) to the start of the boardwalk from the second carpark. Marker there says this. The second carpark is about 07miles (1km) for first carpark. So the boardwalk is about 3.5 miles (5.5 km) from first carpark. From first carpark to top is about 4.5 miles (8km) so overall 9 miles (15km) approx..
The boardwalk is about 0.7 miles (1km) long and about 4ft or over 1 meter wide. It goes uphill and is stepped along the way but steep towards the end. It then meets the stairs which is about 0.3 miles (0.5km) with up to 200 steps in groups of about 10 with resting areas in between. I didn’t count them. There is a viewing platform at the top and the view at the top is magnificent, the landscape is unique and the scenery beautiful. The walk will get the heart rate up but fine for most levels of fitness and would highly recommend. Well done for this walkway as it opens up countryside to all.

Delighted to tick off another thing on my Bucket List: walking the Stairway to Heaven! The views along the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail are just beautiful, with purple heather, a few dozen sheep, as well as a little lake. The Cuilcagh Mountain Park has a huge blanket bog that’s bounded by limestone grassland to the north and montane habitats to the south.
So how long did it take us? Well from the carpark to the top of the stairway and back, it was a total of 11km and only took us 3 hours with a few small breaks. You may have read elsewhere of people claiming it takes four or five hours, but don’t believe that! If like me, you’re relatively fit and keep a steady pace, you’ll manage it in three hours or less (and I have bandy knees!). The full hike will include three different terrain: a dusty stone path over the hills, the wooden boardwalk and then the steps. Take your time, take in the views and enjoy it all!
What should you wear? I do recommend you wear good footwear with cushioned socks, runners or hiking shoes are best, and workout gear/loungwear – leggings and a top will do the trick. Definitely bring water and some energy-boosting snacks, and even a sambo if you take a well-deserved break by the big rocks. And please take home your litter! Be aware there are no spots for bathroom breaks…and nowhere to hide from others to do it in the open!

October is certainly our family climbing month, we have completed Slieve Donard, Divis and Black Mountain and McArthur’s Fort/Cavehill. So today we tackled Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail and the Stairway to Heaven.....no, not the Led Zeppelin song however I did a wee rendition at the top!!!
After a two hour drive we arrived at the car park and paid the £5 car parking fee before going to the top car park. Round trip from here is 8 km.
The weather was overcast and windy, but dry!! My two girls and I were geared up in hat, scarf, gloves, warm walking gear and back pack full of water and food.
The ascent was fairly good along a path consisting of rubble and wooden boardwalk. The scenery and views were spectacular. We then reached the Stairway itself and the ascent steepened. There were over 500 steps, so not for the faint hearted!! It took us 1 hour 40 to reach the top with lots of stops and coaxing the 8 year old!! It was so worth it and my camera still had battery so some nice clicks!!
Coming back down was much easier and quicker , 1 hour 10. So all in all some very happy girls and a proud dad!!

Completed the walk yesterday. The road leading to the trail gets rough once you turn off the main N road so be careful. Once at the carpark, we were greeted by a young boy, no more than 11 years old, whom asked for either £5 or €6 to park your car. Would have to check, but did not seem official and was merely this child and his grandfather asking for money.
Note that there are two stages to the car park, one as you enter and another 2km closer to the trail along a terribly kept and pothole laden road. However, driving to this saves the walk. We had to ask to park there as they attempted to make us park at the entrance citing the other side was full. Having been questioned by us, they checked, and lo and behold, there was a space for us in the closer carpark. The charge to park in the carpark appears to be 100% pocket money for the young lad, as the roads in the carpark and between the two did not show any evidence of maintenance recently.
However, the walk itself is great. The views are spectacular and the boardwalk appears to be well kept. The boardwalk itself starts about 2.5km from the second carpark which is accessed by a lovely walk through the hills. One point is that the boardwalk is not particularly wide, so be careful passing other people.
The day we went had varied weather which included high winds and plenty of rain, so social distancing was easy as many avoided the walk. However, on warm days in summer, I expect it to be very busy and difficult to social distance. You are also exposed on the boardwalk, but we expected this.
Overall, the walk is great with spectacular views and is a great day out if you enjoy hillwalking. The only drawback is the carpark.

The boardwalk was fantastic allowing visitors a panoramic view of the marshlands. I really enjoyed the climb and found it would be challenging for people who aren't used to long-distance walks. Although the boardwalk was built for conservation purposes, this did not deter walkers from littering, therefore I feel it would be wise to have more bins. There are also no toilet facilities which I feel it could benefit from. I went on Saturday 18th July and feel that it was too crowded. Had I known the numbers I wouldn't have attended, especially during a pandemic

We spent 2 nights in a nearby Hotel with the plan to do this hike on the morning after we arrived..... whatever the weather.
Of Course the weather was less than desirable but off we set at 9:30 as we had booked the carpark online for 10am (£5)
You will pass the first carpark on your righthand side , this carpark is free however on recommendation of online reviews we opted for the closer carpark for £5 as it is right at the start of the trail (You'll thank yourself on the journey back down - believe me!).
This carpark is about 1K further up the same road on the lefthand side and there is an attendant there to assist.
The trail leading up to the boardwalk is gravel and approx 2.5K, once arriving at the boardwalk its about a further 3K to include 500 odd steps. The steps can be tough as some flights are alot steeper then others but just take your time and stop for a breather when needed. The people coming down will spur you on.
The weather we had made it all that bit more difficult as we were battered with rain and a strong wind and as a result once at the top we had zero visibilty.
In all it took us just under 3 hours for the round trip.
I am reasonably fit and would often walk 10K just for something to do on a quiet day and found this tough in that weather however not impossible, we also had our 9 year old daughter along for the hike, she would usually love this type of thing and is very used to it however the weather turned her right off - She has renamed it The Stairway to Hell
This was one on my bucket list and although im raging at the weather on the day Im happy to have it under my belt.
We will defo return on a nicer day and without the 9 year old

Loved this walk even though I found it tough going. On entering the car park you face a five pounds or six euro charge. Most definitely arrive before ten or you will be faced with a long walk from the first car park when there is actually a car park nearer the trail head. Great views and a good trail. The weather was ideal. Couldn't imagine doing this on a windy day. Good boots and layers are key

Excellent walk. Nice distance for family with kids.
Easy access and well maintained. Highly recommend to book car parking space at boardwalk.ie The service at car park is excellent with John and his team running a very professional and friendly operation.
Also recommend going to Marble Arch Caves.
No Toilets at boardwalk.ie car park but Toilets at Marble Arch Caves up the road.

At the parking lot an attendant will take cash for the parking fee either GBP or Euros. You cannot pay with a credit or debit card. The hike starts on a gravel path which goes through meadows and across a bog it becomes a boardwalk and then wooden stairs. We didn't find the stairs to be that difficult. The hike calls for a moderate level of fitness but is not overly strenuous. With lunch at the overlook at the end of the hike we spent 2 1/2 hours.
There are no portable toilets at the parking lot but there are bathrooms available at the nearby Marble Arch Cave visitors center.

With Covid is there any restrictions we should be aware of before doing it Tuesday?

Get there early or at end of day a lot of crowds.bring water
Also drive as far as you can through the car parks too

Can anyone confirm that the parking fee is legit and the money goes to the organisation that maintains the trail?

Everyone says how long it takes BUT what is the distance each way in KM or miles
Written 18 August 2019
The total distance is about 8 miles/ 13 Km or 15,000 steps( that’s from the higher carpark to the start of the track , which leads to the boardwalk — I tracked it on my recent walk. However it is a tough 8 miles / 13 km 😰— and not for a “ casual walker” or older person as there are steep steps to climb at the end of an ascending walk.
One I have certainly ticked of my bucket list !!!
