Excellent Excellent Excellent!!!!!!!! The railway station is easily accessable and there is plenty of parking. We recommend paying the £3.00 supplement to travel in the Directors' Carriage. You are served with freshly made tea/coffee and luxury biscuits by excellent volunteer stewards and all included in the price. A very efficiently run attraction.

Tanfield Railway is the WORLD'S oldest Railway built in 1725. The site currently has about 130 volunteers, many hundreds have been dedicated giving both time and energy and have worked tirelessly since 1970 to preserve our heritage and to bring some of the wonderful steam locomotives back to life. Not only do they smile and are always so friendly on... More

Brilliant. Trains and train ride, easter egg hunt, ferrets to stroke, traditional easter egg making, newly hatched chicks, have a go at traditional toys, feed a donkey, lino prints - lots of free activities. Brilliant day out. Staff are amazing and friendly. Super with kids. Hidden gem everyone should try easter weekend

This is run entirely by volunteers and theyre amazing! We had a trip down the line to Sunniside then the train went back past Tanfield and on to Causey Arch on its way to the end of the line. We got off there and went into the cafe for a coffee but ended up adding some lovely vegan cake baked... More

Although this review is unforgivably late please believe me that I really loved the Santa train experience provided at Tanfield. The volunteer staff are an absolute credit and made the event truly memorable for our three year old (and two month old!). Will absolutely book up for next year.

Booked this for my Mum's birthday, had a wonderful afternoon, booked the Winter warmer ticket, lovely soup and bread. Never ending supply of tea and coffee and lovely home made cakes to finish off. The staff are so helpful and friendly and a mine of information. A lovely day, we will certainly be back.

Took my elderly father as a birthday treat. Very interesting looking round the engine sheds and workshops and seeing the old dilapidated carriages waiting for TLC. We had booked the Winter Warmer which was a lovely experience. Delicious hot soup, followed by endless tea/coffee and beautiful home-made cakes. All the staff were super-friendly and so helpful and the whole place... More

I think it is more than 30 years since I last came here! It was embryonic. How great this place now is. Engine sheds to look around old workshops and great scenery. Lovely structures such as the signal box and the stations. The engines today we're beautifully melt all shining. The trip takes about an hour and you can get... More
