Today we visited Gates Nursery in search of a wooden garden table and chairs. On the way through the shop we picked up several item we needed. Walking up a ramp , there it was , a wooden folding table and chairs , ideal for our needs. My wife asked a member of staff for assistance and a lady arrived , scanned our items and said they had 9 sets in stock and told us our order had been sent to the check out. Arriving at a checkout a very pleasant young lady informed us they were out of stock but you have 9 in stock we explaind , arrived a young lady who had missed out on training to deal with customers , we can order one in, what about delivery , that will be £12.50. On top of the item price of over £360. As you can imagine we left. On arriving home my wife went on the Gates website and there was our table and chairs , In Stock and qualifying for free deliver. This Garden Center started off as a family run business and now it has turned into a none caring Monster. Over the years my wife and I have spent several thousands of pounds at this place but as from today , not one penny of our money will pass through your tills.

What a rip-off Gates garden centre is!! Went to buy 2 seat pads for a bistro set. Priced at £9.99. Got to till, gone up to £14.99. Argued about false advertising, they’re not interested. Thing is we were going to spend in excess of £60, not now!! Be aware!! Felt as they were accusing me of changing the price tickets. Never shall we darken their doorstep, obviously got too big for themselves.

After ordering food from the takeaway coffee shop, experienced very rude and aggressive chef when bringing food out of kitchen. Shouted at family members for drinking out of cup when feeling very lightheaded and hot at the time, was well away from others and him also. Was then vilified for not wearing a mask only taken off for a few seconds while sipping her tea, to add insult to injury he was not wearing a mask when he came out of the preparation area with the food that we had ordered. Manners cost nothing at the end of the day, did not react at the time should have called for a manager as such aggression was unjustified without him understanding the circumstances.

Response from Gates G, Manager at Gates Garden Centre
Responded 2 weeks ago
Thank you for your feedback. Customer and staff safety has always been our top priority at Gates and we have strict Covid-safe rules for social distancing that follow Government guidelines. These can be found on our website by visiting www.gatesgardencentre.co.uk/covid-19-customer-guidance/. This includes the wearing of face coverings for all, excluding those who are exempt, and it is our policy to remind anyone that arrives without a face covering that Government guidelines require this. As a result of the current Government restrictions on hospitality businesses, our Courtyard Coffee Shop is open only for a takeaway service at the moment. This means that we are required to ask our customers to consume their refreshments off the premises and there are signs up to communicate this. We have regular visits from our local council in order to enforce this too. May I apologise for your recent experience and if our member of staff was not as understanding of your personal situation as they should have been. I do hope that you will understand that these are difficult times for us all, as we respond to the ever-changing rules, guidelines and restrictions. We are an independent, family-run business that has excellent customer service at the heart of everything we do. Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for any upset this may have caused you. Your custom is very much appreciated, and we hope that you will visit us again soon. Gates Garden Centre

Fantastic place. Gates is just brilliant - amazing array of plants, gardening equipment, books, gifts, interior decor, coffee shop, restaurant and a Farm Shop that is simply amazing. Love it. Great to have it in the area - never come away empty handed.

I have had the pleasure of visiting this garden centre for many years and as garden centres go it caters for everything you will need, from an amazing restaurant to a well equipped though pricey farm shop and much more. The highlight has always been the out of this world Christmas decoration experience until this year. I have noticed for the last couple of years the display isn't what it used to be. Yes it had an amazing Christmas village but the rest was just average. They seem to have gone off oldy worldy and gone for modern pinks and even greys and browns! I'm sorry but it has lost that little bit of magic and I hate saying it because it's given such happy memories and I normally go 3 times from November onwards. I
