The splendid Great Hall of Oakham Castle is one of the finest Norman Halls in England. The Hall is best known for its collection of enormous commemorative Horseshoes donated by members of the Royal Family and Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. The grounds of the Castle are a peaceful oasis in the centre of Oakham. Following extensive refurbishments, the Castle now features improved facilities and activities for families.

Don't miss this place if you are new to Oakham. Free entry and welcoming piece of local history. Good place for children to explore history and design a crest. Clean toilets and disabled friendly though no parking for general public.

Beautiful surroundings, lush park, quaint town and staff in the castle were incredibly helpful. The castle has been restored tastefully, so many horseshoes to look at and so much history behind them. Lots of activities for kiddies and a bit of dressing up. Oakham is...More

A visit to Oakham Castle is must if you are visiting Oakham. This is a great hall of a fortified manor house built between 1180 and 1190. It contains over 200 horseshoes given as forfeits to the Lord of the manor by peers of the...More

Famed for its collection of over 230 horseshoes donated by royalty and the aristocracy, the Norman Great Hall of Oakham Castle is truly unique. The oldest horseshoe dates from 1470 and the latest was donated in 2017. The Great Hall has also been a court...More

A visit to Oakham Castle was made after receiving an update on renovation work. The work has exposed the curtain walls in greater detail than before and a facelift of the Great Hall and it's contents including new facilities has made it more interesting. Do...More

If in Oakham it is worth a visit but I would not travel miles to visit what is a Norman Hall not what you would expect a castle to be. The building is in a fine state of repair and used to act as the...More

It looks like a Church but used to exhibit a marvellous collection of Horseshoes. It was once within the walls of a Castle. It took us an hour and we found it very interesting.

Not a castle - don't go out of your way to visit. Ok for a pop in if you're bored whilst in Oakham anyway (you probably will be) - a renovated hall with horseshoes in uninspiring grounds.

It was pouring with rain during our visit but the children and their parents enjoyed dressing up, colouring in and other activities. The parents and grandparents found the information boards very good. There was coffee available and good toilets. Then the rain stopped so the...More
