Lovely old pub trying to be a tea shop and failing
Oct 2014 • Couples
A few years ago this used to be one of the best value pubs in the town. We revisited yesterday and were disappointed at the transformation, downwards!

The pub was almost deserted and we should have taken that as a sign and walked straight out again.

We were offered a "just the bar menu" but there isn't one! Verbally, we were offered tea and cakes, sandwiches, soup, or quiche, no prices, we had to ask, and received a "look" in reply with a price for each item when prompted. The prices were reasonable so we are not sure why they were not on show, this is not a super-posh restaurant! Far from it.

Any way, so far so good, nothing really wrong, if you want tea and cakes when dropping into an old town pub for lunch. The staff seemed quite friendly and helpful apart from the lack of a menu and any hot food (apart from soup).

However, we ordered quiche to go with a pint of shandy and a half of cider which came to over £16 which seemed a bit steep but when it came it was the smallest, thinnest piece of quiche we had ever seen! It was just a thin bit of pastry with a smidgen of goat's cheese in the middle, dry as dust and quite difficult to eat.

Appalling, we shall not be returning. What a pity. Perhaps it was a one off problem but, if so, why no explanation? Many other places are available for lunch in Banbury so they will need to change their ideas quickly or go under.

Great pub in town centre
Jun 2014 • Couples
Lovely old building and mostly a young clientele..we went on a Friday night which is music night I think...there were 2 acts both in the singer songwriter vein and very good they were too.
The pub has lots of special events seemingly every night / day of the week ranging from poetry readings to art workshops and beauty treatments!..A interesting event I saw on the upcoming notice board was a lunchtime club inviting local people to come in and tell their story..a sort of living folk story ..I love this idea as so much local history was handed down in this way, something mostly lost now..
I hope the pub succeeds it certainly was a wonderful lively place the night we were there, a great place to sit and people watch and listen to lovely music.
The beer was good according to my husband and they made our dog very welcome giving her a bowl of water and some dog treats!
