Stephen Joseph Theatre is a regional producing theatre, established in 1955 by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph, who created the country’s first theatre in the round company in Scarborough on the first floor of the public library. Stephen’s primary aim, to encourage new writing by new writers, remains an important part of SJT’s artistic vision today. The SJT programmes a wide range of productions - drama, music, dance and comedy - alongside film and live streamings from the National, RSC and Royal Opera House and others, providing access to world class arts.

SJT OutReach work with the community, via workshops, projects and classes. Our Youth Theatre provides an opportunity for local young people to experience the exhilaration of performance first-hand.

There are two auditoria at the SJT: The Round, a 404 seat theatre in the round and The McCarthy, a 165 seat end-on stage and cinema. In May 2015, the SJT opened the OutReach Rooms, a suite of new spaces redeveloped as a much needed accessible community hub to host the company’s extensive programme of participatory work.

The SJT enjoys a unique relationship with award winning playwright Alan Ayckbourn, who is considered one of the world’s most successful living playwrights. The majority of Alan’s plays have been premiered in Scarborough, where he continues to debut his new work.

Access: The SJT provides regular captioned and audio described performances and has infrared and induction loop systems. There is level access to the Box Office and disabled toilets, a wheelchair lift to the Shop and a passenger lift giving access to all floors. There are designated wheelchair spaces in both theatres, which are easily accessible from the lift. Please notify the Box Office at the time of booking if you require wheelchair access. Access to some seats in The Round and The McCarthy is via steps, please advise staff when booking if you have any specific seating requirements.

We went to see Pinocchio on the afternoon of New Year's Eve and enjoyed it very much. The cast of 4 did a wonderful job,and my grandson was on the edge of his seat with excitement. The cast worked really hard, singing, dancing and playing different musical instruments,a great start to new year.

Fab entertainment for New Year's Eve. Cracking show, 4 brilliant young actors / musicians / dancers. These guys are destined for great things. My kids had a great time, nice one!

This is a gem! Not only is the whole of the building a theme park for the 1930's but the range of activities and performances are precious to North Yorkshire. Bistro is good value - and again forms part of this theme park atmosphere. Staff helpful and welcoming throughout.

This new play by Alan Ayckbourn has it's world premiere at our lovely local theatre. It's a short play but quite thought provoking and the acting was brilliant. How lucky are we to have this fabulous theatre in a small seaside town like Scarborough?! You must see it !

Went to see the matinee of A Street Cat Named Bob here earlier today and was worried it would be heaving. Delighted to find I could have my choice of seats even at such short notice, and at a reasonable price as well. Will happily be back! (It helps it was a good film too!)

Went to see this new Alan Ayckbourn play last night, it was great, loved it, not as long as his other plays but just as good, shown in the McCarthy theatre which is very comfortable, don't miss this. We are so lucky to have this wonderful playwright and theatre in Scarborough.

Attended to see The Girl On The Train which was decent given some of the reviews I'd heard. Average ticket prices and ok cinema. I don't think the adverts were on longer than any other cinema if anything they were shorter, in my local cinemas they go on for an age so it was a welcome change.

Came here to watch The Girl On The Train, good film by the way. Never really been in the Cinema before but it's a fairly reasonably price to go and see a movie. £7 per person. Went into the Cinema, but it was quite cold, that I had to keep my jacket on plus the adverts took way too long... More

We went to see John Godber's latest play, This Might Hurt, and it did! If you have enjoyed the likes of Teechers, Perfect Pitch and Bouncers then you will probably share our opinion. Although the play was excellently performed in a very comfortable, intimate little theatre, the content was depressing. The first half was a little slow but had quite... More

A very intimate theatre. You feel you are part of whatever is happening on stage. These small theatres should be supported a lot more. The bistro resturant is a must for a meal before the show.
