Impressive, comprehensive and imaginative collection

This is an excellent museum, with a comprehensive, varied and interesting collection, covering all periods of the area's history. The basement Roman gallery was particularly well done. And a nice cafe with gluten free options. Well worth a visit.

Slightly disappointing experience
Sep 2020
Slightly disappointed to be honest. According to their website the Chinese exhibition was current but thankfully having checked the dates it became obvious we’d missed it by a few days. We decided to go anyway and found the exhibition a tad disappointing. Loads of interactive areas for children which is a great idea, but rather too many replicas. The natural history area was rather jaded and badly lit. It was a pleasant way to spend an hour or so but I wouldn’t go back - sorry. I thought the entry price of £10 wasn’t really worth it.

Rather disappointing
Sep 2020
The galleries are reasonably interesting and informative but somewhat underwhelming. I don’t think they’re worth the £10 entry fee for adults and no concessions for seniors either. I think they’re probably very good for children as there seems to be a lot of child orientated interactive things. The stuffed animal/bird section could do with a bit of oomph - great selection of exhibits to be fair but the overriding impression was drabness. Old Tullie House has a lovely garden and the interior is interesting, the exhibits less so. Sorry to have just missed the Chinese exhibition which was still on the website but had finished four days earlier!!

Very good small museum / gallery

We whiled away a couple of hours here. A really good mix of art (Pre - Raphaelites), culture (last day of China exhibition) and local (Hadrian’s Wall, railway, Roman and a lovely natural history display). Some good stuff for kids and good Covid awareness/notices etc. Nice tea room too although they forget to come and take our order.

Very informative without being overwhelmingly

Our first time. We had walked the wall so went to look at the regular Roman exhibition, but stayed for lunch and also went round the Chinese, and pre-Raphaelites exhibitions. All great presentations without, as there often is elsewhere, information overload. As a bonus the coffee and scones are great 😋 The Roman garden was a new one on me too, which as a gardener I enjoyed a lot.

Has far more to see than you imagine.

We had not planned our visit here, but ever so glad we did. This was a treasure trove of historical events and, (while mine are grown up and had not present), fun items for children. I was a lovey place to wander around and take in the very vast / depth of history of the region. If you have a few hours well worth it.

Good exhibitions

The permanent Roman Frontier section in educative and child friendly but not mind blowing. The changing art exhibitions are more interesting and make Tullie House worth visiting more than once.

A Cumbrian treasure

An engaging museum with a mainly local focus including natural history, all well presented! All the family members learned something new today-there really is something for everyone. The staff made us feel welcome and were able to answer any questions that we had. Lunch in the onsite cafe was very tasty with a good selection of sandwiches and cakes. We would highly recommend this experience to any family visiting the area but allow yourselves plenty of time as there is a lot to see!
