We really enjoyed walking around the castle grounds, sadly some of it was shut off due to COViD but there was still a lot to see. A fascinating history with boards placed around to inform visitors. Can recommend a visit.

Very enjoyable visit. The army museum was very interesting, and the interiors of the castle well utilised. The cafe was nice and the staff were friendly.

A beautiful castle steeped in history and charm. Very well maintained with great interpretation boards which explain each area of the castle clearly and understandably. The military museum is a must while you are there - a great step back in time with so many artefacts for such a small building, but very well laid out. We found £11+ each a little steep but understand the need to help the English Heritage charity out. Would definitely recommend for a little piece of history on your trip to Carlisle.

Think this might be one of the friendliest English Heritage properties I’ve visited. From the moment we entered the castle, we were greeted in the most friendly manner, and this natural warmth continued all the way round. It’s steeped in history, Scottish and English worthies have graced it with their presence, but by English Heritage standards I felt it was a bit short of information boards. They are doing their best to make sure that everyone stays safe during the Covid 19 crisis but this does mean that there are bits of the castle off limits. Don’t let this stop you from visiting though. It’s a great way to break a journey with convenient, reasonably priced car parking close by, and the admission includes the small but interesting military museum, also manned by very friendly people.
