Firstsite is a visual arts organisation based in Colchester, Essex. Firstsite's stunning golden building was designed by the Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly, and opened in September 2011. The gallery initiates world-class exhibitions by established and emerging artists, produces publications, and has extensive learning opportunities and artists' support initiatives. Over the last fifteen years firstsite has gained a strong reputation by presenting ambitious work to new audiences in the East of England and beyond.

It seems that the city of Colchester makes an attempt to modernise the city starting in this area. The museum has a nice semi circle design around a garden. Inside the galleries follow this design with sometimes surprising architectural solutions like the small round theater...More

The building itself is a truly inspiring piece of art! Sadly rather tucked away, but when found it’s free admission with well spaced displays and activity rooms. We visited in particular to see some of the exhibits done by prisoners entered for the Koestler Trust...More
