Skip the paid safaris, use online hiking maps and talk to other hikers
Jul 2017 • Couples
Before our trip we picked to go here with the goal of seeing some musk oxen. Since I didn't have a good idea of how difficult it would be to find some I had looked into safaris. I am a somewhat experienced hiker, and we have done a similar search in the United States for Bison in the US national parks in South Dakota. In the end we decided to save the hundreds of US dollars a person and take a chance on our own. This was a great decision.

First off, there is a website for hiking in Norway where you can print off maps for free: norgeskart.no

Find your hike, print off a map and you are good to go.

We started our hike where most sites told us to, just south of the Kongsvold Restaurant in a public parking lot. We headed to the park for a 10 mile hike. The initial climb is pretty steep but it levels off into a grassy plateau. We didn't have luck on the high trail but did our return trip next to river and saw a ton.

The map I uploaded shows where we saw some Musk Ox (a print off of that free site) while they will always be changing location, we had the best luck following the trail by the river.

Have a great time!

Musk Ox and beautiful Scenery
Sep 2016 • Friends
Stayed close by for 10 days and spent every day in the Dovrefjell National Park area.
Some days we went on the bus to Snøhetta and other days we just walked from the park gates. Be prepared to walk for miles but its worth it and we covered over 70 miles in 10 days and came across lots of Musk Ox groups.
A breathtaking and wonderful place.

Snøhetta and musk ox
Aug 2016 • Solo
Huge area of wilderness with musk ox and wild reindeer. Snøhetta at its center was formerly believed to be the highest mountain in Scandinavia, until Jotunheimen was explored. Use the shuttle bus to get deep into the area.
