About
Tromsø Arctic Reindeer Experience is a complete Sami Reindeer experience carried out by traditional Sami Reindeer Herders within a 30 minute drive of Tromsø. We offer a number of packages but with all you will be hosted by Reindeer herders who will show and teach you about Reindeer herding and Sami culture. We have thousands of reindeer in the mountains and a herd of around 200 Reindeer at the camp so you are guaranteed to experience the joy of being close to these wonderful creatures, the feeling of coming into a warm lavvu (Sami tent) and the sounds of the traditional joik (Sami singing). This is a ritual which for us is an important way of life and it is our pleasure and aim to let you feel and experience it. We look forward to welcoming you.

We were standing in the middle of the reindeer herd feeding the animals from buckets -- not a scenario I had ever envisioned for myself! Dinner was a lovely experience with people from several different countries. The best part of the evening was listening to the Sami camp owner and reindeer herder talk about his life and culture. He was warm, entertaining, and very interesting. Tromso is a charming city and one of the highlights of our winter cruise. This visit to the reindeer camp made it a really unique and special experience.

We visited this place at night. It was quite cold and windy out there; however we were well protected in terms of clothes / shoes etc.

It was better after we entered the tent since they had kept the fire burning inside and covers also stopped the wind. They explained us the Sami culture partially and told us that they have reindeer farm comprising of 300+ reindeer. They explained to us about how to feed reindeer and how not to get afraid of them!

Thereafter they gave us one bucket each, full of reindeer food. After entering the farm, many reindeer started chasing the food that we were having and we thoroughly enjoyed feeding them. It was great feeling to have us surrounded by reindeer with beautiful horns.

Once we came back inside the tent, they had nice hot drinks ready for us like coffee, hot chocolate etc. We enjoyed it a lot after experiencing the windy cold weather outside.

We then had reindeer sledge ride which was yet another amazing experience. being in the sledge and watching dark sky and snow all around. We were covered with reindeer skin towel that protected us well. The staff was quite customer focused and customer oriented. After finishing the ride, they took our phones and clicked our photos.

After reaching the tents, we had nice Sami food, very tasty. We sat as close to the fire as possible! The desert was superb.

Just after finishing the food, someone from their team shouted "Northern Lights" and asked us to come out. We all went out running with excitement and were thrilled to see the northern lights. It was amazing experience. Sky becoming green in many patches. One of their team members was very proficient in doing the setting of cameras for the night photography. He set my camera and also clicked the photographs of me and my wife on the background of northern lights. He also gave me some tips to have good photos of northern lights. The experience is unbelievable and every moment was worth it. When we arrived, the sky was cloudy and hence we felt that we won't see the northern lights; however it got cleared and we got to experience the beauty of northern lights.

They explained to us the Sami culture in greater details and explained the unique features of reindeer horns. Amazing to know that the horns grow even 1 cm every day! They were patiently answering all our questions and were very informative.

We spent much more time compared to the plan; however they were very cooperative. I admire their overall hospitality, which made our experience a magnificent one.

Kudos to you guys out there. You made our night and we were thrilled while going back to hotel.

My Wife and I both loved the experience and we eould recommend it to anyone. The attention from the staff is brilliant and unlike so manu others it is not all about giving you the absolute minimum and then shipping you off.
You keep getting reindeer feed until you want to stop. I think we both had at least 4 and then plenty of time for photos.
The food was excellent and again you were well looked after. I stopped after my third bowl!
Then the talk was brilliant, am honest chat and not a staged performance.
To top it off we witnessed the Northern Lights despite an overcast day.
Reindeers may not be as glamorous as Killer Whales or Snowmobiles but this trip is not to be missed.

I really enjoyed this tour. The sleigh ride was nice and it was great fun feeding the reindeer. They were super cute and friendly. The Sami culture part of the tour was very interesting. Lunch was included (I went the vegetarian option as I couldn’t bear eating reindeer after I’d just been feeding them). There’s also got chocolate and tea/coffee which was great after being out in the cold.

Thank you for taking your time to write a feedback on our tours. We are happy that your meeting with the reindeers was pleasant and fun. It is indeed true that for some people it will cause some discomfort to eat reindeer meat after just petting and feeding them. However, we want to introduce to our guests all reindeer- and Sami- related activities in these 3-4 hours of the tour. But of course, there is always a vegetarian version available, and it does not need to be booked in advance. Thank you for visiting us and we hope to see you again!

The reindeer we're amazing, there were over 300 when we visited, and are all wild and only their during parts of the year, yet they were all so friendly and magical. Learning about Sami culture was also a huge highlight of the trip.

We had a specially booked evening tour in late March, so it was still full winter. We experienced a reindeer sled ride in freshly falling snow, a hearty stew dinner in a tepee and got to feed the reindeer. This was truly unique.

I promise not to post all 500 pictures of the reindeer, but I seriously took about 500 photos. They were so cute!

Anyway, the reindeer feeding and Sami Culture tour was great. To be honest though, it's going to be what you make of it. They manage a lot of people at one time and if you're not paying attention you'll quickly miss out on something. I highly recommend the cultural talk with the Sami owners, aside from the cute reindeer that was my favorite portion of the evening. It is a bit lengthy and children may not enjoy sitting for that long, but it was a great learning experience for older kids and adults.

This was also the best reindeer stew I had my entire time in Norway, although I did feel bad eating them after petting/feeding them for so long. The sled ride wasn't anything special but it was relaxing. The experience was worth doing if you have a couple of free hours.

Thank you for your detailed response! The cultural talk with the Sami is indeed very captivating, and a meal with the reindeer meat is a quick dive into the Nordic culture. We would love to welcome you again; and don't forget to share your pictures and tag us on social media!

Close-up with the reindeer in authentic and relaxed atmosphere. Both children, adults and reindeer seem to like this place just as much!

I really wanted to see reindeers but as we were going dog sledding we didn’t need the reindeer sledding too, so chose to feed the reindeers and then have lunch. We were so grateful we didn’t pay extra for the sledding! It had rained in the days before our visit which turned the snow into ice. We were offered spikes for our shoes (we had our own but it’s good to know as they were really needed!).

We loved getting up close to the sweet and gentle reindeers and being able to feed them. You can get as many buckets of herb pellets as you want. Hold the bucket up high as you’ll be followed with reindeers sticking their heads into your bucket. We fed ours by hand and got some great photos. Watch those antlers as the reindeers bend forward to eat!

Hot chocolate and choc chip cookies are available in a warm tent any time you need to warm up.

The sledding looked rather pitiful. A guide led a single reindeer around on a lead, on a short icy route while guests were pulled behind in a sled. I’m sure the icy conditions contributed to the almost laughable ride but it did not look like fun. If you want sledding - the dog sledding at the Villmarkssenter is amazing.

Afterwards we had the most delicious reindeer stew (vegetarian option available). I tried hard not to think about the fact that I had just fed and petted the cute reindeers and now I was eating one! We ate reindeer stew at a another place and it didn’t compare. This was truly delicious!

We weren’t looking forward to the rather touristy-sounding Sami singing and culture talk but it was honestly really interesting! Learning about their culture and history was fascinating and gave the whole experience more perspective.
