About
Blaafarvevaerket, or the Royal Cobalt Works of Modum was established in 1773 for the extraction of cobalt ore from the local mines in the surrounding hills. Today Blaafarvevaerket is one of Norways best known tourist attractions offering historical insight into the extraction and production of cobalt, guided tours of the mines and surrounding area and annual art exhibitions. Other attractions at the museum are the Theodor Kittelsen museum. The artist that created the troll as we know it! Children's Farm, several shops and eateries makes us a complete destination for all travellers. The museum and surrounding area is a popular tourist destination in central Eastern Norway with the Vikersund Ski Flying Arena, the worlds largest, and several other destinations for active tourists near by.

Stunning Collection of Art
Jul 2021
This year's exhibition at Blaafarveværket is exceptional, a true gem. We didn't mind standing in line for a short half hour, the wait was worth it! On loan from the national museum in Oslo (not yet opened), major Norwegian works from the 1800s were a delight. Thank you – we hope that they will repeat the cooperation next year!

Serene surroundings and nice museums and shops
Sep 2020 • Friends
I have not been there for more than 20 years and what I remember best is the peaceful surroundings: the white houses with their black wood, the large lawns and the tall white birches by the lazy river. Serene and still peaceful. We spent quite som time in their arts exhibition, which changes every year. We also spent time (and money) in their various shops, had a waffle break at the Tranen cafeteria by the waterfall, and walked down from there to the other side of the river. From where we had to walk all the way up again as the float to take us over the river is far too heavy for three persons in their 60s to pull to the other side. Some info about that would have been nice! All in all a wonderful day on one of the probably last summer days this year.

The Historic Mine Tour - with thrilling bridge and glass platform!
Aug 2019
This tour is for adults and was held by a very knowledgeable guide. I brought two grandsons, aged 7 and 12. The older boy very much enjoyed all the information and learnt a lot. The younger also enjoyed the tour but found some facts difficult to understand. We all really enjoyed the swing bridge over one of the mine shafts and also standing on the thrilling glass platform!!

I also recommend the children's tour for younger children and will bring the 7 year old on that one later.

The tour for an adult costs NOK 195. The children cost NOK 120 each. Money well spent!

Highly recommended
Aug 2019 • Couples
I recommend visiting this to everyone. Such an incredible history. Visiting mines, the ability to see what did with bare hands - stuck in my head.
Tours available in Norvegian and English. Our guide was very pleasant and keen on answering questions of the group.
Mines are surrounded by beautiful nature. There is also museum and cafe with great food. I highly recommend visiting this place.

Great tour and museum
May 2019 • Friends
Went on the 12 o'clock tour and it was cloudy and wet when we went in, wearing ponchos and hard hats
It was cold inside but the poncho kept me warm. The hard hat protected my head on a couple of occasions and served it's purpose. The tour takes one and a half hourh and was great.. Very interesting and enjoyable. Really recommend it. Afterwards it was sunny and warm and we thawed out with cold beer and waffles... A great way to spend a few hours

Good time at a nice place
Aug 2018 • Couples
My wife and I went for a visit at Blaafarvevaerket (The Cobolt Works) on a sunny Sunday. My GPS could not find the roadname Koboltveien, but we found anyway how to go to Åmot in Buskerud and from there it was just to follow the signs to Blaafarveværket.
This is a really nice place to visit whether you are spending a long time here, or shorter time. There are a lot of things to see and experience. We really enjoyed the Art Exhibition. We had a good, short walk up to the water fall before we entered The Blue Shop where we found nice blue glass articles to buy with us home, and The Glass-pavilion and Wheelhouse was quite interesting.
We had a quick lunch bought from Kroa, the Café's home made food, and we enjoyed it outside on a table by the river.
We had a very good time here at The Cobalt Works. It is more to see and we will come back.
PS. There is as well a children's farm with animals, close by the main parking places.

Trail round the Northern Mines - Amazing
Aug 2018 • Solo
We have been to the Cobalt Mines several times and taken the fascinating tour inside the mine, learning about the history and engineering. This time I wanted to walk up above where the entrance to the mines is located and explore right to the top of the open mining area. Altogether this hike around the Nordgruvene (The Northern Mines) is just over 2 km along a really well made trail and including a number of thrilling viewpoints where it was possible to look far down into the deep cuts in the hill. The colours and textures of the rock face were wonderful in the bright sunshine. At the top I was rewarded with an amazing view for miles across the countryside and lakes to Sundvolden and the Kings Viewpoint which we had visited some days previously.

The Historical Mine tour is Excellent! Good coffee!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Please keep in mind that there are two parts/areas of this attraction. I am reviewing the Historical Mine Tour that lasted about 90 minutes. We had a guided tour of the Clara Mine - we took the Norwegian Tour, they also had a tour in English as well. Ask about this at the ticket desk. This museum has been awarded the Best Museum in Norway in 2018! Our guide was Excellent and full of information and stories. The mine is cold and they provide warm jackets and hard-hats. There is a section with a glass floor that you can look down to the bottom of the mine on. There is a swinging bridge, long tunnels, some displays, etc. Before entering the mine, there are several buildings one can look around in on your own, a snackbar with good coffee and small Meals, an art museum, a tiny gift shop (go to the other location if you want to buy a variety of gifts) and beautiful views. There is also a children`s tour for kids about 4-10; additionally there is a considerably longer Tour that includes an even deeper mine. (If you have all day make sure you drive to the other part of the museum which is about 8 kilometers away. It has displays of items made of colbalt, a petting zoo, more of the museum, a restaurant, etc.)

Visit with family
Jul 2018 • Couples
It was extremely interesting but would have not been as informative if we did not have a Norwegian speaker with us as the guide said we were outnumbered and so he would talk in Norwegian. It would be useful to have a written translation into other languages to help with this.

A good place to visit for a few hours . You will visit the mines and it is a bit cold about 5 C so everybody uses the jackets provided and the helmets in case you hit your head .
Inside watch out for the glass ceiling ( quite safe ) and you will have a marvellous view of the rock .
After the tour of the mine you will see a demonstration of how blue pearl cobalt is made from the gray to blue .
After that you can walk around the site , see the old railway tracks and admire the stunning views .
