Our walk with Alexa, which became a private tour for my husband and me, focused on the Secession begun in Vienna in 1897 by artists Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann, and others. We walked through the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) and went out to see examples of Otto Wagner's architecture (and other design of the period) across the... More

After enjoying a Context walk in Florence, I was excited for two more fantastic tours in Vienna. Clemena at the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Marieta on the 1st District walk were both wonderfully welcoming, knowledgeable, organized and insightful. Looking forward to yet more great tours!

My husband and I loved this tour. The docent had such a depth of knowledge. The postal building was a revelation, the Klimt friezes were magnificent. A must do for anyone who loves the decorative arts and architecture of this period. Highly recommended

We enjoyed an afternoon at Wieninger Vineyard, a tasting tradition walk to multiple cafes. and a walking tour of the first district. The docents were excellent and these tours provided us a fuller Viennese experience.

My husband, sister and I attended the city/music tour with Frederico - he did an excellent job showing us the musical and other highlights of the city, and he even treated us to a piano 'concert' - he is an amazing pianist. We truly enjoyed the tour and highly recommend it!

Each time we travel to an eligible city, we check to see what Context offers -- they usually provide one of the highlights of our trips! In Vienna we very much enjoyed our time at Schonbrunn with Context Docent Piroska - she was wonderful as a guide and we enjoyed being with her as a person! We also toured the... More

We met our docent at an out of the way restaurant to begin our tour with the story about the Roman times and the Danube and canal. It was a great introduction. We ate our lunch at the Salzmart Restaurant at the meeting place which was excellent local food! We walked for the full 3 hours and we ended up... More

We took Dr. Reinhard Travnicek's Secession tour which was outstanding. We started at the MAK applied art museum which helped put the whole tour in perspective, by seeing their Vienna 1900 exhibit--also went back to see that by ourselves. Then a tour of the Otto Wagner Post office savings bank. We did not have time to see the small exhibit... More

I took the Vienna Secession Walk. There were only 3 participants on the walk, which made the tour almost private. Reinhard was very knowledgable and was passionate about the subject. He even gave us a list of reading materials on Vienna! We covered the Museum of Applied Arts, Wagner's Postal Savings Bank, Karlplatz, the Secession building, and the Wagner apartment... More

My parents and I took the "Counterpoint and Harmony, Music in Vienna" tour. Gilles, the docent, was extremely knowledgeable and could not only provide an amazing and detailed tour, but could also answer any question we had thoroughly and without hesitation. Although the tour is pricey, we definitely enjoyed it. The tour provided history regarding music, opera, theatre, and architecture... More

Staying in Leopoldstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
Leopoldstadt
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.
