We visited during the Christmas run-up so Spittelberg Quarter looked even more atmospheric and romantic. Tight streets and alleyways with a great range of arty shops, restaurants and pubs. Enhanced by lovely Christmas decorations and Christmas market stalls. Just immerse yourself in this lovely area of Vienna. Definitely worth a stroll round.

The area is very close to the Museum Quarter and very quaint. We had a great lunch with many more options than the museum's cafes.

Couldn't be better for a lovely dinner during the summer months. Open air seating, beautiful courtyards and tons of local Viennese restaurants. One of our favorite dining spots!

Just past the museum quarter you find the Spittelberg area which is also home to the best Christmas market in Vienna. This area has a lot of restaurants and pubs and also has some of the nicer handicraft shops in Vienna (knitwear, leather, jewelry) and is absolutely worth a visit.

Just around the corner from our apartment and full of interesting Christmas stalls, hot punch and Gluhwein and little restaurants advertising their traditional evening menus. Super area, we ate there twice and loved wandering through the pedestrianised streets, great atmosphere.

We stayed in the K and K Maria Thersa Hotel and found this neighborhood charming. Apparently much work went into encouraging property owners to rehab the buildings in the neighborhood starting in the 1970s and it is just a cute 5 block pedestrian enclave.Apparently there are crafts markets held monthly on the pedestrian streets there too

Staying in Neubau

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s art district, Neubau buzzes with galleries, arts and crafts, trendy restaurants, avant-garde shops, and cafés. Neubau’s Spittelberg quarter with cobblestoned Spittelberggasse and Gutenberggasse make for a perfect stroll alongside Biedermeier houses and art shops. Don’t miss the historic courtyard at Amerlinghaus with its typical Pawlatschen galleries, a perfect hangout on a warm summer evening. Museumsquartier is Neubau’s undisputed highlight: the former Imperial stables house various top museums of 19th to 21st century art. If you love interiors, head for the Imperial Furniture museum (Hofmobiliendepot), one of the world’s largest furniture collections. Find your favorites among a dazzling array of Baroque, Biedermeier, Art Nouveau and Modernist chairs, sofas, cupboards, coat hangers, foot stools and wash basins. No weekend visit would be complete without stopping by a local café on a weekend morning for brunch.
