Michaelerplatz was one of our really favourite squares in the city. It has a reallt good historic atmosphere, dominated as it is by the entrance to Hofburg Palace. However we also were very impressed with the Church dedicated to St Michael which can be seen in this location too and is one of the oldest churches in Vienna. It is... More

This church, easily recognized by its slender tower, is a mixture of remnants of medieval frescoes, gothic architecture and barok decorations. All are worth seeing, and throughout the church information is given on what to see. One of the side chapels has a nice dome painting, and also the organ is worth having a look at.

Minus 1 was not the temperature but a reference to the basement level in buildings in Europe. We visited the crypt of St. Michaels Church, an amazing "graveyard" under the church. You can book online but we just turned up 5 minutes before the tour time (11am and 1pm, although days vary during the year so check the website) in... More

Michaelerkirche is impressive and the views from the rooftop are great! I do have a soft spot for churches and cathedrals, but it is not one of my favorites. It is worth paying to get in only for the views. Otherwise, stick to admiring it from the outside, is far more impressive, and cheaper.

I must admit that I've seen far more impressive churches than this one, outside and inside. Being a history buff however, I had to visit it. It is the former parish church of the Austrian monarchy. Over more than eight centuries, the church has incorporated a medley of architectonic styles. Like many churches in Europe, it was regularly expanded and... More

I was particularly taken with the sculpture work encompassing the altar here at St. Michael's. Unlike the brightly painted and gilded altars found in many other churches, the entire area behind and above the altar is covered in white stucco relief clouds. A host of angels emerges from this backdrop, many of them falling down from the heavens. While this... More

This church can be seen, just as Stephansdom, from far away of Ringstrasse. It's roof is very characterstic, and one cannot tell it is so imposing if just standing in front of the entrance on Michaelerplatz. Inside, however, it is not so impressive. Yes, there are traces of old mural paintings, the altar is interesting, there are some inscriptions on... More

The exterior is Fantastic to look at, I walked all around it and loved the construction of the building. Entering you will be surprised that the walls themselves are painted in a pale color, very serene and comforting feeling. That subtlety in the walls really makes the special objects inside pop. There are a good handful of special creations throughout... More

After walking around the 1st District (Hofburg, Roman Ruins next to Griensteidl Café, stores & cafes on Graben), take a short break in this church, complete with bones in the crypt. Hearing a visiting choir sing during a concert was lovely!

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
