About
The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

This is an interesting museum with a small Christmas market around the holidays. We had a tour guide arranged with our group tour. The work by Klimt is very nice but could have better lighting. Nice works by other artists as well.

I have little interest in art myself, but was told I must see Klimt when in Vienna. So we booked a ticket to the Upper Belvedere (only - there was a combo ticket available too) to see the famous Kiss and other works by Klimt.

It was a nice visit! Not too crowded inside so you could take photos (no flash of course) and meander through comfortably.

Top tips:
- book tickets online. Queue was huge and slow
- tickets are timeslotted, but they didn’t actually check these at all
- we didn’t bother with audio guide as there is a downloadable interactive app

I visited only the gardens of Belvedere Museum but even this worthed every moment I spent there. This Palace is also stunning, gorgeous and awe inspiring-even from outside- with very glorious and semiological decoration which is preserved perfectly. The gardens cover a large area and have thematic decoration. It is all divident in various thematic parts. Its better in Spring were all around is bloomed, but in winter is also good as it brings an essense of romantic-gothic era.

If you’re looking for a vast Klimt collection, then you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

It’s a pricey €18 with crusty staff. The ticketing staff are a tad impatient for those of us that have questions in the exhibition especially after waiting in line for a while, again in the freezing temperatures. They also don’t bother to mention anything about audio guides.

There’s one Munch, two Rodin sculptures, one Van Gogh and one Monet. There’s the famous Klimt “The Kiss” which everyone and their dog is trying to take a photo as opposed to enjoying it.

The gardens are large and decently maintained but it’s definitely no Versailles, Schonbrunn or Sans Souci in Potsdam.

If you been to D’Orsay in Paris, Munch Museum in Oslo or any museum in Amsterdam, this one is a total let down.

Thank you for your feedback! We are sorry that our admission prices seem overpriced to you. Our prices are in line with the average of comparable Viennese museums. We offer various discounts, such as discounted online tickets, reductions for students and senior citizens and free tickets for children under 19. Regarding staff: We are sorry that you had a bad impression of our staff, they do their best to serve all visitors as quickly as possible, all information about the museum and exhibitions can be found on our website or ask the staff at the museum. We will take your feedback into account in our quality service!

Another of those attractions with amazing architecture and interior design. There are 2 museums here Upper and Lower Belvedere, connected by a huge garden between them. It's free to hang around in the garden (which reminds me much of Versailles in France), but entrance fees apply to enter either or both the Belvederes.

I'm glad I opted for just the Upper one. Both Belvederes house a wide selection of art collections from paintings to statues that I mostly do not know how to appreciate (not cultured enough). Most of the Upper Belvedere are paintings of Gustav Klimt, the most famous Austrian painter. Guess these 2 museums are only interesting for those with a strong interest in art. For the general tourist, it'll suffice to just spend time taking photos in the outdoor garden, free of charge.

Thank you for your feedback! We are sorry that we could not meet your expectations. The fact, that the Belvedere is an art gallery can be explained by the history of the castle. As early as 1781 the imperial picture gallery was opened in the Upper Belvedere under Maria Theresia and was one of the first public museums worldwide. However, we are pleased that you liked the architecture of the house.

Very interesting informative experience, worth doing especially if you enjoy art.
It’s a 20 - 25 minute walk from the end of the main shopping mall of Vienna.

They are very strict (even in low season), with the entry time on your ticket. If you are more than 10 minutes before the listed time, access is prohibited. No signs of flexibility. The selection of paintings and religious art is enormous

Thank you for your feedback! It is unfortunately necessary to enforce our admission policy so strictly in order to be able to permanently monitor the visitor load. This serves to prevent the house from becoming too full. In this way we enable all visitors to have a safe and pleasant stay in the exhibition rooms. We are happy that you enjoyed the large collection after a short waiting period.

The building and gardens are beautiful.
Some of the collection is closed off so there was a reduced rate today (14 Euros). There is a mix of styles here. Some I liked more than others. The Klimt collection was the highlight. We spent a couple of hours here.
