About
The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

Not only about Klimt’s kiss…
Aug 2020
When you think about Belvedere Museum, the first painting which comes to your mind is “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, but there also are many paintings from artists such as Schiele…

Gorgeous view, great museum
Jun 2021
We visited the Belvedere Palace for the first time and had somewhat mixed feelings. Both the palace and the baroque garden are very, very beautiful. They are probably the best part of the Belvedere. The view is breathtaking and well worth the trip. While the collection and exhibitions in the palace left a rather fragmented impression.

There are no historical rooms with a rich interior, it's an art gallery showing mostly, but not exclusively, Austrian artists. Gustav Klimt is magnificent, and his famous "The Kiss" is exhibited just wonderfully in the spacious hall surrounded by his other works. But paintings from other periods seemed somewhat mixed up. One had to move from a thematic exhibition to the permanent collection, that is from a small contemporary art display into a Gothic art collection, and so on. It seemed to be a kind of Noah's Ark of art, and we did not understand was it a new museum concept or a lack of any concept at all. Nevertheless, we saw a lot of impressive paintings and learned some new names.

Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed your visit and the displyed artworks. We are sorry to hear that you were confused by our art display. Due to the renovation of the Lower Belvedere (our second museum) we moved an exhibition, which was planned for the Lower Belvedere, to the Upper Belvedere. That's why we currently need more space for special exhibitions than usually at the Upper Belvedere. We are looking forward to 2022, when the Lower Belvedere will reopen and we are going to have more room for our exhibitions again. Thanks again for your critical opinion, we will include your feedback in our quality management.

The gardens are the best destination
Sep 2020
The museum may be closed due to COVID but the gardens of the palace are incredible. Entry is also free. The vast gardens are so well-kept, with so many areas. So even if stately homes are not your thing, come purely the gardens and fountains! They are a ten minute walk away from Hauptbahnhof U-Bahn station on the U1 line.

One of the Most Romantic Places I've Ever Visited
Oct 2019
One of the most romantic places I've even visited. The Belvedere palace is full of masterpieces and is a masterpiece itself. The Kiss - the most famous painting of the most significant Austrian knight of the brush - is exhibited in Belvedere. I believe the museum is a must-to-visit place in Vienna.

My favorite garden in Vienna, not as lavish as Schönbrunn but very beautiful and cosy. I took my kids there when they were toddlers every weekend.
