A return to a favourite venue, this little theatre was showing 12th Night, where confusion reigns. Great fun, good acting, music and singing. And all ended well with the various couples united. You need to book and be prepared for a crush at the cloakroom and bar.

Wow- a theatre in Vienna producing plays in English. It's a lovely place too with an intimate feel to it. The staff are incredibly friendly and the prices are reasonable for a theatre experience in Vienna. We saw a touring production of Woody Sez, which is a quality show about the life and music of Woody Guthrie. I would recommend... More

I came to the theatre with my Vienna friend who has season tickets. It is a lovely venue, albeit a little run down and could use some tlc. The play we saw was Run for Your Wife, one I had seen in London in l989 with Ray Cooney, the playwright, staring in it as well. I had always wanted to... More

I attended a production of a very good play - Hello / Goodbye , which I thoroughly enjoyed. Well acted & well written. I was pleasantly surprised to find this English theatre here in Vienna. A nice theatre , with a bar ; nearby are a couple of restaurants , I went to the Pizzeria Verdi very good. If you... More

You can reserve your tickets online and pay up to a week before the event. If you, like us arrive on the day of the event you can call them and pay via credit card. Your tickets will be waiting at the cash desk so be a little bit early as there is a queue for tickets. The venue was... More

We regularly visit this small pretty theatre when we visit Vienna. This time it was Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw’s play on the relationships between the sexes. The cast was good with Eliza making the change from flower girl to duchess despite the “help” of the irascible Henry Higgins. You need to book as it is usually full; ordering interval drinks... We saw the European premier of Annapurna here. The theatre itself is relatively easy to find, and there is some easily accessible food and shopping nearby as well. The ticketing staff all speak English, and the plays are presented in such as well. The theatre itself is beautiful on the inside, with frescos covering the ceiling. The seating is flat... More

This pleasant little english theatre is located somewhat off the beaten track, some 5-10 minutes from the Inner City. But in the days of smartphone maps this should not constitute a hindrance even for the casual tourist. The place is rather small with some 200 seats, but provides the flair of a well-kept traditional style-theatre with some respectable interior decor.... More

This is a small theater not far from Vienna's Rathaus. It is somewhat old fashioned in decor, but absolutely lovely. We go every time we are in Vienna, and the plays are always first class. The theater is usually full, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

Staying in Josefstadt

Neighbourhood Profile
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.
