For centuries the Vienna Hofburg was the centre of the Habsburg empire. Today the palace houses three museums which afford historically authentic insights into the traditions and everyday life of the imperial court: The Imperial Apartments with their original furnishings and decoration, the Sisi Museum with its sensitive staging of the empress' life, and the Imperial Silver Collection which contains a comprehensive range of tableware and other utensils used at the imperial court.

We visited the Museum and the Palace. The Museum has a very interesting collection of day to day objects, wonderful ones, from Pots to Silvery. The Palace you got an idea of how Sisi lived. Worth every penny.

The Imperial Palace is beautiful and impressive both from the outside and from within. I love the architectural details - it is impressive to realize how the Austrians maintained it in an impeccable shape throughout many years. It is particularly beautiful to view the lit building at night.

We did the self walking tour of the Hofburg Palace while on our break in Vienna. The ticket we purchased included the tour around the Sisi Museum as well and away we went! The Hofburg Palace has to be seen to be believed!! Considering that Austria has been Republic for the best part of 100 years, seeing this palace and... More

Beautiful and luxurious! The palace has a Sisi museum first and then the palace rooms. The audio guide helps to understand the life story well. Some part of the palace is being restored. It will take good 2 to 2.5 hours to do justice to it.

Interesting to get a flavour of the huge power and wealth once held by the Austrian empire. It's more like a royal village with The Hofburg being just one of many palaces, now museums and art galleries.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
