Great zoo. All the animals look relaxed and comfortable. It covers a large area so allow time. We had a brilliant lunch in one of the restaurants. There were a lot of people there, but it never felt crowded.

The polar bear made our day! Well laid out and a pleasure to stroll through. The animals are well cared for and they run excellent conservation projects.

You could spend a whole day at the zoo and another at Schoenbrunn itself. Lots of interesting animals, enough information for non-German speakers.

This is a beatiful zoo. It was the firts time a saw a panda. They also have 2 very cute koalas an gourgeous big cats. I recommend visiting during the week, in the weekend and on holidays ( like when I visited) it is quite busy.

It wasn't as clean as the rest of Vienna and I found visitors to the zoo were very rude and like to scare the animals.

This is a great zoo. Our family always visits the zoo wherever we go, and this one is set up nicely. You will enjoy walking around this zoo and seeing all of their animals.

After a weekend in Melk we took our daughter to the zoo before flying home. Great range of animals with large, well-thought out enclosures, many with viewing windows below water level. It's just as well a 3 year-old has a short attention span or we'd have struggled to get round it all in time for our flight! Drove there and... More

Claimed to be the oldest zoo in the world. One of the best I've visited. Relatively large. The animals (both wild and domestic) live in nice conditions. They tried to eliminate the iron bars and used glass on most places. You can even go among some of the birds and bats. There are playgrounds for the kids. And fun places.... More

The zoo is in the Schoenbrunn Gardens and is a couple of miles outside of the centre so maybe best to take the subway (Green line U4). It takes about 10-15 mins to get to Heitzing stop which is the one after the Schoenbrunn. If you plan on doing the palace after the zoo then this makes sense as you... More

Staying in Hietzing

Neighbourhood Profile
Hietzing
Vienna’s 13th district has always been in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, but has interesting hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Allow half a day for the imposing Habsburg residence and the gardens with Gloriette belvedere. Reserve the other half to discover the secret charms of this posh residential neighbourhood. Sneak out of the gardens at Hietzinger Tor (Hietzing Gate) and head down Hietzinger Hauptstrasse for Kaiserpavillon (Emperor’s pavilion), an Art Nouveau gem right on top of U4’s metro railtracks. At local institutions Café Dommayer and restaurant Plachutta you can mingle with residents, their families and friends. Dommayer has risen to fame since waltz king Johann Strauss and his orchestra performed there regularly. If you want to go beyond private villa gazing visit Klimtvilla and Hermesvilla. Art Nouveau genius Gustav Klimt had his last studio in a now beautifully renovated villa, which is open during spring and summer. Hermesvilla at Lainzer Tiergarten animal enclosure and nature park is a must for all romantics and fans of Empress Sissi.
