The Bergkirche (Hill Church) in Eisenstadt is one of the most unique buildings I've ever been in. While it is technically a church, and still used by locals, the whole building is designed around a sort of pilgrimage through the various stations of the cross....More

The Bergkirche is historically interesting due to the fact that it houses the burial place of the composer Joseph Haydn. The church building itself seems to be ailing, as a strong odour is presnt in the building.

The walk around this interesting church is a nice change to your normal church visit. A historical place to visit and one of only a few places worth visiting in the town of Eisenstadt.

I have visited Eisenstadt several times both as a performing musician and as a researcher. Touring and performing in the Bergkirche, and especially viewing the tomb of Joseph Haydn, are moving experiences for the musical tourist and essential if one is in this region. The...More

The Bergkirche is a mystery of architecture but once you see the stations of the cross so thoughtfully represented you begin to understand the strange shape of the building. The sanctuary itself is beautiful and the organ is a masterpiece of vision and sound. The...More
