About
Situated on the Rue du Saint- Esprit, right in the heart of the old part of the city, the Luxembourg City History Museum opened its doors in 1996. It displays permanent collections as well as temporary exhibitions that in a very innovative way illustrate the history, spanning more than a thousand years, of the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The museum consists of two parts: the floors below the entrance level (Rue du Saint-Esprit) illustrate the city's evolution from an economic, social, political, architectural and town planning point of view, whereas the upper levels are reserved for temporary exhibitions. Works of contemporary artists line the tour. You can for instance discover the work Swing by Su-Mei Tse. Space is also reserved for temporary exhibitions (1st floor, rooms 18 and 19), which highlight the museum's collections.

History of Luxembourg
Oct 2019
Situated right in the heart of the city, this museum goes into a lot of detail about the past of Luxembourg, including a section about the European Union. Well presented exhibits and a very large lift that goes between floors.

Good overview of the modern history of the city and state
Jun 2020
None of the museums in Luxembourg are spectacular or great. However, this museum gives a good overview of the history of the city and state in terms of population and work for the last good 100 years, which has changed in an extreme fashion, and certainly is a very intriguing aspect of this tiny country. Also the territory it lost in 1839, when it became independent more or less of The Netherlands, and the history that led it to become part of The Netherlands and its later independence are detailed. When we visited the special exhibition was to honour 100 years of universal voting rights.

A good museum if you want to understand the history of the Grand Dutchy. Well laid out and presented with most explanations also in English. Recommend

Informative Museum

This is a terrific museum to get an overview of the history of Luxembourg. Housed in a very modern, pleasant facility, the museum is on five levels. Three levels contain permanent exhibits and two contain special exhibits.
The permanent exhibits focus on the general historical timeline of the city up to recent times. This was interesting, but the most enjoyable portions of the museum were the special exhibits. One of these was focused on the Schueberfouer, the annual carnival that has become a part of Luxembourg's national identity. The other special exhibit was a collection of Firebacks that were interesting and represented delightfully artistic ironwork.
Overall, I was rather happy with this museum. At €5, it was well worth it and a visit can easily be accomplished in two hours. If you are the type who enjoys learning about the place you're visiting, this museum is worth the effort to see.

Best of the Museums in Luxembourg
Nov 2019 • Solo
This is a good place to start if it is your first visit to Luxembourg. You get a good outline of the history of the city and of the country.
There is a good amount of information presented in English as well as the local languages (French and German). The massive glass lift is quite interesting in itself.
The weak spot is the top floor which seemed a bit of an afterthought, or maybe they didn’t know what to do with the space?

A lot of space not quite filled with exhibits.

I liked this museum, but thought there would be more exhibits on the 3 floors. I did think the fact that the floor did not quite meet the walls, but left a bit of a drop off, to be possibly dangerous.

Learn about the history of Luxembourg
Aug 2019 • Family
If you are interested in the history of Luxembourg this is a great museum to visit. The museum is a little difficult to navigate as you enter the museum on an upper floor and the museum is chronologically ordered starting on the bottom floor. The audio guides are informative and well produced. One of our party listened to the German version, another the French and another the English. Well worth a visit.

I spent a good few hours in this museum finding out about the history of Luxembourg and Luxembourg City. The museum is fully accessible - it has what must be one of the largest lifts in the world in the middle of it. You start on the bottom floor and work your way around and up. There's a mixture of artefacts and interactive exhibits about the history of the country. Definitely worth a look to find out more about the Duchy.
