The Whale Museum in Madeira is currently one of the most innovative museums of its kind in the world. Holder of a valuable museographic collection, this space rigorously documents the history of whaling in Madeira. Through stereoscopic 3D movies and among models of whales and dolphins in full size, visitors can learn about the life of these fantastic creatures and their marine environment in a fun and interactive way. The Whale Museum also promotes research on cetaceans and its preservation and study of the history of whaling in Madeira.

We had mixed weather during our visit, so a few short day trips were just the ticket. We enjoyed this museum with its guided tour in English on headsets. For best reception stand on the little whale stickers on the floor and stay put. If you move away the audio commentary stops and/or starts again from the beginning. Some interesting... More

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. The exhibits on the whaling history is very informative, and the audio-visuals work with proximity sensors. So you just walk along, and the audio unit (with headset) picks up your location and plays the associated clip (be sure to stand still until it is finished, otherwise it jumps mid-clip to the next section). Much... More

Our huge enthusiasm for this, is to encourage visitors to go there! This is the most remarkable Museum - the history of whaling (aided by experienced whalers from the Azores) from earliest days when long open boats were rowed out into the Atlantic to spear a sperm-whale, and drag it back to shore to be cut up - but chiefly... The museum is in two parts - the first part informs people of Maderia's whaling history in the archipelago, and the second is all about cetaceans especially the ones which live in and around the islands. The whaling section is very frank and honest and includes archival film footage which some may find upsetting. Once whaling came to an end... More

We visited this museum because we had some time on our hands. We were very happy to have done so. The museum offers a first hand multimedia experience into both the world of the early whalers and the world of whales and deep sea life. Seeing how the early whalers, spotted whales passing by, set out to to sea in... More

Enjoyed strolling around the museum. It has good history about Madeira and sperm whale. You could spend quite a few hours knowing about the what they did with the oil of spermwhale and what they used for. Very informative.

I did not expect to have so much fun! I felt a deep connection with the ocean life and the cetaceans wich lived and died arround this marvelous island! The electronic guide is very professional and the 3d movies are very touching. In the end of this visit I felt more inloved with the nature like I did after seeing... More

We did a short and lovely walk from above Machico, just before the Canical tunnel, up around Pico do Facha and across the valley to Canical. Sunny lunch in Canical and then a couple of hours in the Whale Museum. Wow! It's a real surprise, so well done! Great insight into the old Whaling methods and very interesting marine biology... Visited this museum in company with my 9 year old daughter. We both loved it - modern, informative and educational with the bonus of a nice bar with a great sea view. The audio system was really effective and the 3D films a brilliant idea.

What this museum lacks in the way of whaling artefacts it makes up with with great films Some being 3D. Staff are very helpful and speak good English. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours to watch most of the films and read the interesting written information. Small car park on site. Whilst in the area walk down to the harbour... More
