Due to the huge amount of black lava dust, this glacier is carrying, this glacier is also called the Black Glacier. Place in a beautiful surrounding, it makes a nice contrast.

Like many others, we spotted this glacier as we drove past on the ring road (on our way to the black beach), so we stopped off on our way back. It was getting late and the weather wasn't good, so we didn't walk all the...More

It is very sad that the glacier is retreating so much each year. Climbing on a glacier is a great experience that one doesn't often have the chance to do. The ice is something special.

Small parking lot off ring road. Hike on marked paths into the glacier.pass a small glacier lake. Amazing how fast this glacier is receding. As a result it looks dirty and black. Plenty of warnings along paths about unstable areas. Be wise. Well worth it.

I was there in winter season. I know that on some of the glaciers snowmobiling is possible all year around. Pls check with Iceland Tourist Board or some of the adventure companies. Enjoy!
