There was a carefully presented display of the first settlement in 870 and the archeological finds which showed how they lived. I was a hard life, especially with half the population dying of plague, famine, more plague, volcanic eruptions and fighting between rival chieftains. Eventually...More

The National Museum is excellent. We spent a morning here and could have spent more time. The exhibits really draw you into Icelandic history. This is well worth your time while in Iceland

Made a quick drive from downtown to visit. On;y needed about an hour. It was nice that everything was in English. Two floors with information that helps explain how Iceland became settled. Worth the time.

Lots of history about Iceland with many, many artifacts relating to the island. I thought it was very interesting. Don't leave without having lunch, coffee or a snack at the restaurant there. Great food!

I like learning history about places I visit and I leaned a lot of new things from this museum. It is a small museum, but you can spend a few hours there. There is a small cafe there as well & they gave us a...More

Some interesting things from Iceland’s past, though a little dated in presentation. I preferred the settler museum for a snapshot tbh.

Relatively small museum compared to all the ones I have been to but definitely a good visit to learn the history of Iceland. If you have to pick one museum to visit while you were there, this is definitely the one to go to.

It was closed on Monday so we went again on Thursday. Good displays tracing the history of Iceland. Other then from Denmark, never knew the original Viking settlers would have come from Scotland and Ireland as well!

Hi, clearly this depends on a variety of factors (interest, knowledge, with kids..?), but as a general suggestion; try 2 hrs and add a coffee break. Enjoy!

There are lockers, but not big enough for suitcases.
