One of the most beautiful places near Reykjavik. The view of the mountains along the sea is absolutely stunning. Plenty of seabirds . Just take care about the high tide. Awesome place for observing the northern lights, near Reykjavik. In winter it is very cold here, the cold wind is blowing. Nice place to spend some time and just enjoy in sea, air ans energy. Every season. You should come here at least once to see it.Visited June 2019Written 19 March 2020

When we noticed on several phone apps that it seems very likely we would see the Northern lights one evening, we drove to the Grotta Lighthouse and noticed several other people had the same idea. We sat along the road for about 30 minutes until some cars started to become impatient and drove away. We finally found a parking spot after about 30 minutes and sat for another 10 minutes before we saw people getting excited. We jumped out of the car to set up the tripod and camera and saw the beautiful light show! I'm grateful we did not have to go far, as this is about 5 minute drive from Reyjkavik.Visited December 2019Written 3 March 2020

We were able to get great views of the Northern Lights without the cost. Not sure what the Light House looks like during the day!Visited November 2022Written 10 November 2022

A few tips:
I took a taxi to get there. A bit luxurious, perhaps, but it was a 4.7km walk from where I was. When you get there, there is a causeway in the form of a beach leading across to Grotta Lighthouse. Access to the island, depends on the tides, so eventually, at some point, the island does get cut off by the sea. So, watch it!!! When I went, there was an Icelandic family there... so I did what they did. When I saw them leaving, I did too... and the sea was starting to be dangerously too close to my wellies for my liking.
The place is beautiful, spectacular even. I went around 4 p.m. So, no "golden hour" shots. Locals have also told me, it's the perfect place to get great shots of the Northern Lights if you are lucky enough to catch them.
One little secret thing that MADE my day was sitting in the individual-sized hot water foot spa on the rocks at the beach, which is known as Kvika. I decided to eat some delicious Icelandic chocolate and have a Gull Beer and that water was PIPING!!!! Amazing. In fact, I think it was my favourite thing about my whole trip.
Oh, I had to walk back to Reykjavik. The wellies skinned ankles. BADLY.
So, have a plan for getting back. I saw those scooter things... lying around but there were gale-force winds that day... so I thought I'd better not.

While exploring the Reykjanes Peninsula, my wife and I visited this picture perfect lighthouse on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The visit starts in a parking lot which is free to park. We then walked on the path through the lovely green field of a Nature Preserve. Note that the Nature Preserve area is closed from May 1st through July 30th for bird protection. Fortunately, it was open when we visited in August 2022.
Once we arrived at the Lighthouse, people who work for the Lighthouse advised that it was not formally open to visitors. However, they graciously allowed us to peak into the entry level. It looked to be well maintained both inside and out and would make for a nice climb when it is open for visitors.

The walk to the grotto proved much more spectacular than the grotto - rocks and beaches, birds and fauna. To see the grotto, you must get the tides right.

We went here around 10:30 pm to look for the Northern Lights. We didn't go up to the lighthouse. We had been hunting for about two hours, on our way home from Selfoss and we finally saw a weak view of the Northern Lights through our iPhone camera. It was disappointing, but I'm glad we were able to see it at all since the conditions weren't great while we were there.

Great place to see the northern lights! We visited every evening during our stay and we got lucky on every evening seeing a bit of the northern lights, until the last few days when we saw a proper and amazing show!

We visited late one evening and were thrilled to witness the lights from this location. It is the closest place to Reykjavik to see the amazing display.

This isn't a hidden gem as there were a lot of tourists out trying to catch the Northern Lights. It's on the outskirts of the city so there is less light pollution. We did see the lights the night we went, but honestly had just a good of an experience seeing them from our rental home in the middle of the city the next few nights.

We tried to visit the lighthouse but the roads into it were closed. We took some pictures and watched birds in the area but the best part was a little hot pool to soak your feet. A passerby told us about it so we went and used the little hot pot. It was cold outside (in July) but the water felt great on our tired feet. I'd love more time to explore that area.

How is the parking situation at the lighthouse? Is there a public parking area? Or do we need to park a distance away and walk?

is it difficult to walk on the rocks towards the lighthouse during low tides? i see they are huge uneven rocks with slight sand in the edge but not sure it's enough wide for walking in the sand

How do we get from Reykjavik to Grotta if we don't have a car? Would a taxi wait for us, or is there a bus service?

We did have a car and it was a quick drive, so I would imagine 30-60 minute walk. I do believe there was a bus stop just before the car park/turning circle.

does a full moon reduce the view of the lights or is new moon better
Jo 74
Staffordshire, UK15 contributions
I am not sure whether the moon affects the lights, you just need clear skies, if you can see the stars you are likely to see the lights and it is a nice spot to look out over the sea, it does get very cold though, most people sit in their cars to wait for any activity, others take a blanket to wrap around them

We really like this location and wish to stay at a B&B that is close by. Which one is the closest one to the lighthouse?

I have heard that you can only reach the lighthouse during low tide but where can I find the timing of low/ high tide of the day? If I go during daytime will I be pretty much safe or will I possible be stuck at the lighthouse if I don’t leave on time? Thanks

you do not need to worry about being stuck. there is a beautiful view from the parking area, just next to the lighthouse. I don't know where can you see the tide times, but we went there morning and evening and it was safe to walk over to the lighthouse. beautiful place.

Can you walk from Reykjavík harbour or is it too far?
Louise M

you can walk but it takes roughly an hour. there is also a bus you can catch - for example for the way back. make sure to chevk the weather because the walkway is very exposed to wind and rain.
