About
The old harbour warehouse, Hafnarhus, offers a progressive exhibition program with local and international contemporary artists. The works of key figures, as well as established and emerging current artists are presented in six galleries. Hafnarhus is also home to the works of Erro (b. 1932), a significant player in the international pop art scene. In 1989 Erro gave the City of Reykjavik a large collection of his works, a total of about 2,000 items, including paintings, watercolours, graphic art, sculptures, collages and other works spanning the artist's entire career from his youth. Hafnarhus is located in the oldest part of Reykjavik, where the town’s boats and first docks lay. The building was erected in the 1930s and at the time it was one of the largest buildings in the country. The house was renovated by Studio Grandi architects in 1998-2000 to house Reykjavik Art Museum. Hafnarhus Kitchen is temporarily closed. Meanwhile we offer free coffee for visitors!

Some of the best contemporary art I've seen in a long time!
Aug 2021
We caught the "Iðavöllur: Icelandic art in the 21st century" show during our recent trip to Reykjavik. The work resonated personally - it was poetic and deeply moving - and the exhibit design and descriptions were really well done, too. The gift shop was great as well - lots of unique souvenirs or gifts you won't find elsewhere in the city.

Contemporary art
Jun 2021 • Friends
This is one of three locations of the Reykjavik Art Museum, and this location is dedicated to contemporary artists. Our family had a great time viewing and interacting with the work here. It was an interesting and diverse display of current Icelandic art, and well worth a visit.

National art museum - in 3 places - i fyou love art of all forms, then it is a must see
Feb 2020
The national art museum is split into 3 buildings around the city. Modern, Contemporary and Sculpture.
We went to all 3 and they were excellent. They all had very good information by each item as well as a lot of technology providing further information.
None of them were overcrowded with artefacts which was good so you could concentrate on a smaller number of items.
The contemporry and modern have good cafes. The sculpture has free tea and coffee.
We spent 1 - 2 hours in each one so did this over 2 days. They are split up quite far apart over the city.

Tiny art museum showcasing Icelandic artists
Jun 2019
This gallery features contemporary art. It is located in the old warehouse building near the Old Harbour . The building itelf is gorgeous with amazing space with multiple rooms and exhibition spaces .Beautiful building, but the art inside... not all on a level of national gallery. But, maybe I'm not that into modern art. The size of the gallery compared to the size of the building seems much smaller. There’s also a well positioned cafe offering tremendous views across the Old Harbour and a nice shop . The staff are nice and helpful. So, if you enjoy contemporary art, go , but If you tend to not care for it, maybe skip it .

Interesting place , exhibits were good . The one for kids on the main floor was my fave and you could take photos . Makes interesting background . Painted walls on the top floor were interesting . On the second floors is complimentary coffee , gift shop had some fun things . Lady at the front register was nice.

Very dispappointing
Feb 2020
Expecting to see some art work/project, some selection of displays or anything, all I encountered was vast emptiness and empty walls; this was one of the very rare disappointments I have encountered in this gorgeous country.

A very provocative contemporary art museum
Nov 2019
This museum will challenge you in different ways. There are things here you wonder who would call this art? Other things are quite remarkable in the ways they make you think about your way of life or character. You won't leave this museum being bored, that's for sure. The large exhibit on Chairman Mao and the PRC is very provocative and challenging. Yoko Ono's exhibit makes you make or run away from commitment to imagine peace. There are some exhibits that may make you feel mad. But art is supposed to make you feel something, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's not so good. Be challenged at this Art Museum

Interesting exhibits
May 2019 • Couples
This Art Museum is the largest of the 3 art museums located in Reykjavik. I found the Erró exhibition currently showing to be a very interesting perspective using the theme of China’s Mao posters incorporating well known European landmarks.

What I loved is that I was able to see the whole museum without requiring the whole day. The staff is also incredibly nice and helpful.
