About
The old harbour warehouse, Hafnarhus, offers a progressive exhibition program with local and international contemporary artists. The works of key figures, as well as established and emerging current artists are presented in six galleries. Hafnarhus is also home to the works of Erro (b. 1932), a significant player in the international pop art scene. In 1989 Erro gave the City of Reykjavik a large collection of his works, a total of about 2,000 items, including paintings, watercolours, graphic art, sculptures, collages and other works spanning the artist's entire career from his youth. Hafnarhus is located in the oldest part of Reykjavik, where the town’s boats and first docks lay. The building was erected in the 1930s and at the time it was one of the largest buildings in the country. The house was renovated by Studio Grandi architects in 1998-2000 to house Reykjavik Art Museum. Hafnarhus Kitchen is temporarily closed. Meanwhile we offer free coffee for visitors!

- emwhitnallSydney, Australia534 contributionsA great experienceContemporary art is not normally my thing but I had an excellent visit here. There were lots of interesting collections, but it wasn't overwhelmingly large that I felt like I had to rush through the exhibits or missed anything. The exhibit on Erró was particularly interesting, and it was great to see some local art.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 March 2024
- David APreston, United Kingdom530 contributionsGreat building, less sure about the artDifficult to review this art gallery. Many of the exhibits didn’t appeal at all but - each to their own! However, the actual building is fascinating and is well worth a look. The cost of entry is included with the Reykjavik city card.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 August 2024
- betweensnowandskySalisbury, United Kingdom70 contributionsWell worth a visit, and central. An interesting exhibition, with leaflets explaining each piece in detail. Quiet, even on a Sunday. Really interesting building / space. The immersive exhibits were incredible. Welcoming staff. Would have been nice to have more postcards etc from the current exhibition in the shop.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 September 2024
- Kate AGrappenhall, United Kingdom11 contributionsUnexpected encounterWe have previously visited the gallery on a different trip and returned today. The building is fabulous. Staff are lovely and informative. Came to see Jonsi’s ‘Flod’ having travelled to Reykjavík to attend Sigur Ros at the Harpa concert hall. We enjoyed all three installations (1001 nights, Time to Time and Flod). We were especially blessed to meet Jonsi himself at the gallery. We are grateful to Claus who works here, for encouraging us to go and speak with Jonsi and for taking a candid photo of our chat unbeknownst to any of us. Thank you Claus for giving us the icing on the cake of an incredible week in Iceland - you’re a superstarVisited December 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 December 2024

Located in a former harbor warehouse, the museum provides a fantastic insight into the landscape of contemporary art in Iceland. A fantastic experience that I would definitely recommend. In addition, I was lucky enough to arrive at a time when a small daily tour was hosted (at 2 p.m.). The tour was free of charge (included in the ticket's price), and it was short, yet very insightful. Very friendly staff members.

I liked this little art museum. It had some interesting modern art pieces that I enjoyed seeing. A lot of colorful and popish kind of art including an exhibition about an artist that creates murals via scrap magazine/printed media cut outs. I just wish there was more. I felt like we were able to see everything on about an hour and a half and this includes reading the art descriptions. Worth a visit.

A must see if you come to Reykjavik - we were blown away. Housed in a wonderful building, the displays were thought provoking, interactive, funny and sometimes moving. The Erro exhibition was fantastic. Also, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. A great experience and (given that we are used to free galleries in London and Iceland is so expensive) this was reasonably priced.

Hafnarhus was the very first museum that we went to in Reykjavik! Ada who was working at the reception was so friendly, kind and patient with us! :) She explained all the expositions in detail and helped us navigate around the museum!!! Thank you so much!!! :) My favorite part of the museum's exhibitions was Helena's Margrét Jónsdóttir works. What a great symbolism.

This is a nice museum on the harbor - one of three museum locations. We only saw one other visitor during our visit. The collage display with video and art materials was a nice touch and the displays were fine and dandy. The fact is there was a lot of space and not all that much art. The quality was good, not great but this is a very nice early step in growing a larger collection I hope.

If you're an Art enthusiast, you will definitely enjoy exploring the Reykjavik Art Museum. The place needs a couple of hours to get the best experience. It's devided into different rooms, each focusing on one aspect of Art.

Went to this museum to see the ‘stitches’ exhibition. The website didn’t say it was in the sister museum an hours walk away. This main central museum only seems to have works by a single artist ‘Erro’, which although they were interesting, a bit of variety would have been better and worth visiting. Overall unless it’s raining or you like Erro comic pictures, not worth visiting. We walked to the Stitches exhibition, which was also disappointing.

We caught the "Iðavöllur: Icelandic art in the 21st century" show during our recent trip to Reykjavik. The work resonated personally - it was poetic and deeply moving - and the exhibit design and descriptions were really well done, too. The gift shop was great as well - lots of unique souvenirs or gifts you won't find elsewhere in the city.

While I am normally not a huge fan of modern art, a friend highly recommended that I see the exhibit of the Icelandic artist Erro, who turns 90 this year. I am so glad I went. The museum’s large warehouse space was a perfect backdrop for the artist’s irreverent political/pop art. The exhibit itself is well worth seeing, though some pieces aren’t appropriate for children.

This is one of three locations of the Reykjavik Art Museum, and this location is dedicated to contemporary artists. Our family had a great time viewing and interacting with the work here. It was an interesting and diverse display of current Icelandic art, and well worth a visit.
