- Ričards EdijsLatvia430 contributionsThe friendliest and motivated lighthouse keeper I have ever seenI still cannot stop believing how friendly was the lighthouse keeper. He educated me and my friend about the lighthouse and about the fantastic acoustics in it. Besides the accoustics and fantastic scenery from the top, there was also a beautiful little art exhibition. A truly fantastic experience.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 October 2023
- sfosterphotographyYarmouth, Maine248 contributionsGreat Views From The TopWe stopped at the Akranes Lighthouses to get some photographs and drone video. We ended up meeting the “gatekeeper” and had a thoroughly enjoyable and educational visit. AND, we got to go up into the tower, which we did not expect at all. We’re told this is the only lighthouse in Iceland that allows visitors inside it. We had a terrific visit and then visited the local Bakari for a delicious snack. We love Akranes.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 January 2024
- Cha7710 contributionsLovely little lighthouseWe got snowed off when we tried to travel south from Reykjavík so we went north to Akranes instead- it was a blessing in disguise. We came across this stunning lighthouse and had a lovely time. You can go up to the top and the views are amazing! The man at the desk was so lovely and accommodating- he told us about the acoustics in there so we hummed all the way to the top. It is a must see for anyone visiting Iceland!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2024

If you have free time to kill because you have already visited all the highlights and you have your own car, maybe it is worth it. To get there in bus can be complicated since you need to take at least two buses. The city itself is not welcoming: factories, industrial buildings and a few places you can hang out. If you really really like lighthouses, I guess that you could go. However, I have been to others and in the end, there are all the same. If you go just for the picture, just look at the ones that are posted here.

A rather austere structure from the outside but if you get the opportunity to go inside this would improve the experience. The acoustics inside are excellent so be prepared to sing a song. Take the steps to the top too.
There is also a small lighthouse nearby which is slightly more photogenic.

The whole town of Akranes was a fun visit and a short drive from Reykjevik. Reviews claim the lighthouse has a small cafe but it wasn't open when we were there and looks like it can't open. We walked around the point and snapped some great pictures. It was Sunday so most stores were closed but we found a pleasant coffee shop. We visited the town's hot springs pool and watched the locals run from the pool right into the ocean. Not us. We walked around the historic town museum near the cemetery and hiked up the ridge north of town.

The lighthouse keeper is welcoming and enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge and the lighthouse with visitors. Climbing to the top provides a great view and an interesting demonstration of the acoustics within the tower. The guide clearly loves his work and interacting with visitors from around the world. He helped us to plan the rest of our day, including checking a northern lights website and suggesting a good viewing location back in Reykjavik.

If you like seeing and photographing lighthouses, this is a great place to stop. there is an old and a newer lighthouse. The new one allows people to go to the top during limited hours, but we were too early. Nonetheless, it's a nice stop.

This is a cool lighthouse. We climbed up to the top for a view of the harbor and ocean. There was art on each level to look at as we ascended. A school group arrived when we were leaving and it was very cute to see them in uniform. We arrived right before it officially opened and stayed for about 30 minutes. Worth the stop.

Drove across from Reykjavík and wasn’t disappointed, great little lighthouse with a very warm and informative welcome. Make sure to sign the guest book and have a chat with the lovely owner.

Hi! Will we need to pay for the tunnel to get to Akranes in early June? How much please. Will the lighthouse be open to visitors then? Thank you.

Sorry I didn’t see your question. The entrance is free but you probably know that now. And it is free entrance all year so I hope you had a wonderful stay in town.
