Well preserved ancient castle in the old capital of Finland!
Fantastic ancient very well preserved castles with nice exhibition, friendly staff, moderate price. Located well in the city. Looks gorgeous. I wonder in a summer time even better. Please book at least 3 hours to view that all! Trully recommended!

    Interesting and massive
It is quite big, there is the oldest part built in the 1300s and the newer area in 1500s. Strangely they do not offer headsets, but a guided tour to download on your phone via QR code, so if you do not have your own earbuds…either disturb the others or just forget it, There are a lot of signs, but they are kind of confusing and it is not clear to understand where the different areas are. There are a few exhibitions and rooms that show everyday life in different centuries. What I liked the most are the miniatures that reconstruct life scenes of the past. With kids it is worth to take a tour that allow them to act ancient times with guides in costumes that make them play “king and princess”. Walking fast it will take at least a couple of hours to go through the whole site. They offer a few free lockers and coat hangers at the entry; no cafeteria available, so bring your own refreshments. It is a good way to spend a cold afternoon, but it is not a memorable experience

    Surpringly big exhibitions
From the looks of it, I have seen bigger castles, therefore we were surprised by the size of the exhibition area. Easily calculate needing 2 hours at least, unless you are rushing through it. It starts with some rather plain and not very stuffed rooms, later - especially during the 2nd part - there is much more information and things to see, therefore we also liked that part a bit more. The outside area is rather quickly explored and covered, but still offers a few nice views.

    Well restored.
Had a very quick visit while waiting for the ferry to Stockholm. Lots of stairs but very few spiral stairs - bonus. The exhibition spans pre-medieval, medieval and renaissance times. Lots of interesting information is well displayed and doesn’t take too long to read. There’s a long room with artefacts across most of the times- again quite interesting.

    hienoa
Spent several hours at Turku Castle wandering around the exhibits. Everything in the exhibitions are well labelled and can be read in Suomi, Svenska and English. Fantastic guided tours in all 3 languages that are only 4 euros each with museum card. One of Finland's best historic museums.

Very nice medieval castle with lots of rooms to explore. We had a nice afternoon viewing the medieval and renaissance floors, as well as exploring the exhibition on historical clothing and items. Very good price for what you get, would recommend to anyone coming to Turku!

Very interesting and an incredible restoration. We started in the Bailey and round tower part of the museum rather than the castle proper as there was a big school group headed into the castle. I would recommend starting where we did. There is an excellent time line which gives a good overall sense of the history. There are also excellent models, photos and tableaus with excellent graphics and touchscreens. Really well done. The castle itself is also interesting and the restoration and descriptions chart its journey from a medieval fortress to a renaissance seat of government. I highly recommend giving yourself several hours to explore and learn.

It's not very imposing or highly decorated on the outside, but the inside is enormous and so interesting. The Bailey area alone is full of history with interactive displays and lots of scenes set up to show life in the castle. There is also of the most amazing dress-up rooms for kids I've ever seen. Armor, dresses, hats, shiels, swords, you name it, you could put it on and pose for pictures. There were so many excellent displays and models about the many expansions and additions and about the fires that destroyed parts of it and the renovations, etc. There are English language tours, but you need to check the time on the website to find out the time. The guided tour gives some more insight into daily castle life and more information about furnishings and wall art and decorations and our guide was very knowledgeable and funny, too. The castle seems to keep going and going, with a whole section of Renaissance rooms and the other floors of the castle, with more great displays and another awesome children's area about the life of the princesses and a huge diorama/dollhouse of the castle. The exterior is very deceptive, because it just doesn't look that big from the outside, but we needed three hours to get through everything.

A stay in Turku without visiting its castle would have been unthinkable for me. It was a pleasant walk of about an hour (3km) from the cathedral, which I had visited first, along the Aurajoki down to the 'Turun Linna' at the mouth of the river. When it had first been constructed around 1280 it was located on an island. It was meant as a military fortress, becoming later also an administrative centre for Swedish Österland, as southern Finland was then called.

The most splendid times for the castle were in the 16th century, when it was the residential area for John, son of king Gustav Vasa, who made himself the Grand Duke of Finland, later becoming King of Sweden himself. In his time an additional floor was added to the Turku Castle - in Renaissance style, with bright and spacious rooms.

In the same period also the bailey in front of the keep was finished, used as the residential area for the Swedish Governor General of Finland in later years. After a big fire, the main castle was given up and the bailey used as a prison and garrison. When the whole construction became a museum end of the 19th century a lot of restoration took place at both buildings.

It is easy to spend three hours in here. In the main castle the three lower floors dedicated to the 'Medieval Castle', the upper floor to the 'renaissance Castle', while in the attic is an 'Artefact Collection'. In the attached bailey we have the 'Exhibitions of the Castle's History', then 'Epoch Interiors' and the playground 'Children's Castle'. There is also a restaurant and a shop. It is no surprise that Finland's largest medieval building is also its most visited museum.

This place is amazing. You can easily spend 3-4 hours here. So much to experience. Its a 30 minuts walk along the canal from the City center 12€ entrance fee. Also very close to the ferry port.

Firstly, it’s 14 euros to just get in. There was 2 other people there and it was the most boring castle I have ever visited. You can’t just leave you have to follow this one way trail up and down stairs and thru small hallways. Ridiculous. I couldn’t wait to get to the exit. It was a pure waste of my time and money.

Turku Castle is one of the best preserved and interesting castles in northern Europe and offers a great glimpse into the Swedish power period where they were they dominated both sides of the Baltic. From the Stures to the Vasas and everyone in between, it seems that most of the important Swedish noble families (and those they wanted to reward) had some connection with the castle. There's plenty to see; the only problem is that you'll get a bit footsore and hungry seeing it all! Worth the admission.

The medieval castle has been well restored, and now houses the city's historical museum. The visit of the castle, is very well organized, the route is long and very interesting, very nice room of the guards where you can admire the beautiful frescoes, interesting also the chapels and the Royal Hall. The second part of the visit, focuses on daily life in the castle, the court and the history of the castle. Absolutely a visit Recommendation, the entrance fee costs 14 euros and deserves them all. Very good castle restaurant, great for a lunch stop.

From the moment you enter this amazing castle it's like you are time travelling to the past and it's history.
It's not another old boring castle, it's a must visit castle. You get to know a lot about the history of Turku which was the first capital of Finland.
Bear in mind that you need at least 2 hours to tour around and you will find information in Finnish, Swedish and English. There are different levels and steps while you tour inside the castle.
I highly recommend it.
